Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

My family has a group chat but we rarely use it. It’s mostly for holiday and birthday planning.

“A" group chat? Which group? We have a lot, all with slightly different members, but none are used regularly.

I generally don’t participate in negative public discussion online. I rarely respond at all to public Facebook posts, and very rarely to Reddit. This is the only public forum where I post regulsrly, and I don’t usually reply in negative threads.

If we’re talking about reading negative public posts, it’s at least 1/3, and if the negativity persists, I mute or ignore. There’s plenty to read that doesn’t make me feel angry, frustrated, or down.

Yes, this. Life’s too short.

I have too “Family” WhatsApp groups, one for my nuclear family (Me, Ms. Baggins and our son) and another for my (birth?) family( My mom, My dad (before he passed) and my sisters)

My wife and I are not going to start watching the new season of Stranger Things until all of the episodes are released. I suspect we are not the only ones.

So I’d like to just gently remind folks who want to discuss the latest poll here to please refrain from open spoilers.

We have several family chats, which we use practically daily. We create new ones for particular groups when traveling together. “Dinner at 7:00” doesn’t need to go to those not participating.

This is why I said 5%. This is the only place I participate in public discussions. Since Doorhinge left, almost all interactions here are “fine” or better.

Yeah, I just post in forums. And I’m not going to hang around in a forum that mostly makes me unhappy.

I occasionally get negative emails. I don’t answer them.

*two not too :man_facepalming:

Is the giver rich, or moderately well off, or short on money?

I’m going to offer something more than a token, in any case; but how much more depends on how badly they need it. And that also makes a difference to how hard I’ll press if they demur.

The only place I post is the Straight Dope, so I said 10%. But I still get mad over stuff I read on Facebook five years ago, does that count?

Family chats: Multiple.

  1. My husband and I have a Discord server with multiple channels, ranging from #schedule to #finances to #neurodiversity. (Links about ADHD and autism.) It’s incredibly useful for organizing our various thoughts and conversations. We use it all the time. It’s even more useful than a face-to-face conversation in some ways. “What size shirt did my husband say I’m supposed to buy my son?” Checks discord channel #son “Oh, yeah! Size 6.”
  2. Family chat with me, husband, Aunt, Uncle and Grandma.
  3. Family chat with in-laws
  4. Family chat with all cousins who have small children

Those are the ones that get the most use. Most of them are repositories for cute pictures of the boy, since we rarely post photos of him online.

I’m surprised Miss Manners didn’t, back in the day, set a precise percentage of what to give to someone who gifts you a winning ticket. This sort of quandary can’t be uncommon and must go back a hundred years or more.

Yes, exactly. 10% would be about right.

I find the celebrity Death pool to be a bit too macabre. My vote would be - Nope. But that is just my opinion, i am not pushing to get rid of it, just not for me.

mmm

Very much this in most cases. If it’s a personal gift from a friend or family member, depending on their wealth, say 10-20%. I have family where they’d probably refuse it (they have far more wealth than I), but I’d absolute offer in sincerity. And I have family that are more financially strained than I or could use it in starting their own business, and they’d be more than happy to take a nice chunk.

Oh, FTR, since it’s not clear, I’d offer the 10-20% of the remainder after taxes. Since I’d have to pay taxes on the full amount anyway, though I’d explain that as well when they got a funky number (probably rounded to the nearest 500/1000 though).

Not the most generous option, but after replacing our home electrical and being in the process of paying $10k or so for a new roof, well, I would be happy to have such a windfall.

We have had the Death Pool discussion before. I’ll just recap to the best of my ability. Probably if there is any real discussion to be had it should be in ATMB.

The DP was not always in The Game Room. It existed before the Game Room and was in MPSIMS. When The Game Room was made it was moved there. it’s really a hybrid thread that isn’t easily categorized. The actual game play only happens in December of the previous year. It’s happening now if anyone wants to jump in. The more the merrier. After January 1st the game play is over except for occasional score updates from the Death Mistress and some gloating. The rest of the thread is informational about any notable person who died whether or not anyone picked them. Then there is a bit of freewheeling discussion about those notable people which would be at home in MPSIMS or CS depending on the person. I learn a lot about people that wouldn’t get there own thread. Since the thread itself could fit in a number of categories depending on what part of the discussion you are looking at (TG, TGR, MPSIMS, CS) it might as well stay where it’s at.

Gee, I didn’t know it had opportunities to learn about the people. I may have to start following it.

The only catch is they are dead. But freshly dead.

I ain’t got no body,
And nobody cares for me.
