Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

If the acting was that bad I would have excused myself to the restroom and found the nearest bar, then texted my theater companion telling them where to meet me when they’d finally had enough of the scenery chewing.

25 some odd years ago, I was taking acting classes and our teacher told us that Fort Worth was overly enthusiastic about giving standing ovations. It was actually not liked that much by the actors.

I only give a standing ovation for a particularly well done performance

I attend a lot of plays. There has never not been a standing ovation.

I selected Other. If I’m unhappy with a performance I’ll do the standing part, but I won’t give what anyone would call an “ovation”.

(In other words, I’ll do a very modest amount of clapping)

mmm

I moved to CA from IL in 1987, and a cow-orker brought homemade tamales for our very small office that year and a couple following years. I’d never heard of this tradition.

Since then I’ve been gifted them occasionally. Always appreciated – tamales are awesome.

@squeegee’s Christmas tamales poll really needs a “Huh??” choice.

And @Jackmannii’s clickbait headlines poll needs an “All of the above, I guess” choice.

“No” is huh.

“Ever wondered why Christmas tamales are a thing?” No, because I’d never heard or imagined that they were a thing.

I still don’t know they are a thing.

In Western States. Now, unlike Tacos and Burritos, I am not a super fan of tamales, but it is a thing out here in CA.

We were going to Walt Disney World and someone asked me if we were gonna go to the Mexican restaurant there-I replied- “You know what we call Mexican food in San Jose? Food”. You can also sub LA or SoCal for San Jose. trump said we’d have a taco truck on every corner if Biden won- and sadly, yet another trump promise broken.

Tamales I understand. I like them. Christmas tamales are something I first learned about today.

I grew up in SoCal, so I’ve known about tamales at Christmas since I was little. I even got roped into helping a friend make some one year. Tons of work! She had two great big galvanized steel vats – one for the masa, and one for the filling. I was stuffing the husks. Cut my hands to pieces. If I ever do it again (unlikely) I’ll wear gloves.

One of my coworkers who became a good friend brought me his mother’s tamales every year. But I had to pronounce the name properly before he’d say he’d bring them. Sometimes he brought one or two sweet ones, but I preferred the savory ones. Yum, indeed.

Tamales were also a big fundraiser for our charitable contributions activities. A place in East L.A. made them in bulk with bulk prices. They always sold out, so, you had to get yours fast!

Seconded. (Or thirded.) But my ignorance has just been lessened.

My freezer is (sorta) full of Christmas tamales I helped make this year. It was fuller several months ago, but sadly the tamales seem to evaporate if you don’t keep an eye on them! Our school band (under the previous director) always sold tamales the week before Christmas Break, made by the band parents/kin. I like mine Christmas-style as well.

When I was a little kid, my mom put me up on her friend’s horse, and I just sat there while it walked for a minute. I finally get to count it!

Actually that was Marco Gutierrez, the co-founder of Latinos for Trump. But my disappointment at the lack of taco trucks knows no bounds or party. :sob:

I just walked out to the corner. No taco truck. Very sad.

I never did see what was scary about a taco truck on every corner. And I’m not even a huge fan of tacos. But hey, food trucks are nice.

Doesn’t a taco truck on every corner also imply that all these immigrants now have tax-paying jobs and are bolstering the national economy? You know, like you say they never do? (generic “you.”)

¡Viva Camiones de Tacos!

I tried to ride the dogs when I was small (they were fairly large dogs) but they just sat down so I slid down off their backs.

I didn’t think that counted.

You forget the MAGA Schrodinger’s Mexican theory- at once both too lazy to work and taking your jobs away.
