Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 3)

I can enjoy a fireworks show, but I’ve lived long enough that I guess the novelty has worn off. Balanced against the crowds, hassle, and very late start in the Pacific Northwest, I don’t get too excited about the prosect, We were discussing going to one via boat this year, which is more fun and less crowds (or at least a different type of crowd–lots of boats).

I have three different weather apps on my phone: AccuWeather, WeatherNation, and The Weather Channel, plus a radar app; I only have push notifications on AccuWeather. That app will only push notifications (advisories, watches, warnings) for my current location, and the two places which I have set up as priority locations (where I live, where my parents live).

As I live in the Midwestern U.S., many hundreds of miles away from an ocean, I don’t receive tsunami warnings; were I to be in the area for which a tsunami warning was issued, I’m pretty sure that AccuWeather would warn me, but I’m also pretty sure that the default EAS warning that gets pushed to all phones would also come through; that’s exactly what happens when I get a tornado warning.

I’ve never received a tsunami warning despite having a weather app on my phone.

Given I’m living in Colorado, at over 6k in altitude, if we get a tsunami warning… Well, apparently the hydro-civilization from the Abyss regretted their earlier mercy and it’s time to pay the piper!

Firework shows are fine, going OUT to see one with the various over-imbibers on the roads… no thanks. Voted take them or leave them.

That’s probably what’s coming through on my phone.

I’m in southwest Pennsylvania. The nearest large body of water to me is Lake Erie, which I’m pretty sure doesn’t have tsunamis. Then again, I do live in a town famed for its floods, so I pay attention to all storm warnings anywhere upstream from me.

Wow. While we were mostly looking out at the fireworks, you must have been looking up!

I voted “No” on the tsunami warnings, but I think the more accurate answer is “I have no idea,” as such a warning would certainly rely on allowing notifications, which I don’t do for any apps.

I can ascribe at least one kooky (nonscientific) belief to every person I have a close relationship with. None of those beliefs have turned out to be dangerous.

I wouldn’t go that far, but i can certainly ascribe kooky, non-scientific beliefs to lots of people whose friendship i value, and some relatives.

I had a friend who was collecting Tabs for “kidney disease”. When i informed him that no, they didnt get any dialysis time, he got all sad.

Next time, i wont mention minor harmless things like that.

And since like 75% of Americans have a religion, deciding to take them out of my life would be even more foolish than a belief in Molemen or Ghosts. And i have no issues with a belief in FTL- someday, anyway. In fact of the list- (religion, spirituality, FTL travel, ghosts, mole men) i only consider molemen to be too weird for me. Maybe a better list - “moon landings were faked”, “flat earth”, that “school shootings are faked, done by actors or false flags”, that “trump is the Second coming” and so forth.

Mind you- right wing evangelists are right out.

And there are plenty of decidedly non-kooky beliefs that are “not currently supported by science.”

I’m sure it’s a delusion, but I feel that the ring provides a more air tight fit when the cap is screwed back on.

The EU requires tethers for all single use plastic bottles, and Switzerland partially follows this requirement. So I answered about the tether, but ignored the 2L restriction.

I like the tether and find it convenient as it helps me avoid dropping or losing the lid.

For the travel question I used the term all expenses paid very broadly. My expenses in Vegas includes gambling money.

It’s hard to answer the dream question since I almost never remember my dreams. At best I remember snippets from right before I wake up and they quickly fade.

I am at a loss to understand why Salinas, CA is on the list but Monterey, CA is not.

Two towns near family and the home of Powell’s Books and Voodoo Doughnuts.

Books are expenses. Right?

My close to death in a dream was a very gentle death from old age, with a cat there to comfort me. In the dream I was fine with it and I hope to actually go that way; but not yet. I didn’t actually die in the dream but I was so close that I was no longer able to move.

— just remembered another, much older. Very short dream. I had been driving on a very twisty mountain road next to a cliff, and in the dream I had just gone over the edge. I was thinking “Thirty seconds ago, I could have slowed down. Now I’m going to die.” I woke up while dream-me was still in midair.

That one was shortly before I left on a long trip wandering around the USA. I drove some of those mountain roads. I slowed down, and lived.

The dreams I don’t remember I of course don’t remember; I just ignored those, though they’re presumably most of them.

I picked two cities that I know people either in or close enough for a day trip to who I’d like to visit; and Honolulu because I’ve never been to Hawaii or to anyplace like Hawaii.

I marked “other” in the killing someone in a dream poll, because I didn’t kill the… person? thing? just because I woke up, it was a very strange dream, someone or something was threatening my family and I just lost it, went completely berserk, I was trying to strangle it and I woke up with my heart hammering in my chest to the point of almost hurting.
I’ve never had a dream like that before or since.

I don’t know where some of the cities are within a state (w/o looking); especially for all of them in California nor do I know what if anything is an attraction(s) in that city; IOW, what am I doing during my week there - if I really want to see ___ I’d be better off in city A vs. City B.
Ft. Lauderdale & Miami are about ½ hr apart & in one continuous metro area. Unless you want to be near something specific, ie. a friend/relative’s house I’m not sure that it much matters which one you would stay in.

I promise you would much rather sleep in Monterey than Salinas.
