Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 3)

I just got back from a trip, and other cities’ independent bookstores are a weakness of mine, so my nightstand is extra-laden right now.

I answered 2-5 for the number of books and mags on-deck but I forgot about the ten unread books in my Kindle app.

Same here.

I dont follow sports.

I love that Eze has scored more against the Tiny Totts this year than Richarlison has against Arsenal in his career. Tott’s caretaker even admitted that Arsenal are currently the world’s best team. He won’t last long saying things like that, though.

Watches tend to irritate my wrists, particularly when I’m typing a lot. And then I take them off. And then I lose them. So I’ve stopped wearing them altogether.

As for ranting guy - if he’s not a threat other than being loud and weird I’ll probably just leave him to it. It happens occasionally around here. If he appeared to be a genuine threat to me or my neighbours, I might do something or call the police, depending on the actual threat level. And if I thought they were in need of some sort of help I could actually provide, I might also do that.

But that hasn’t happened yet, apart from the one drunk guy who fell over in the street nearby and the wife and I helped to a safe place on the sidewalk to wait until more bodily control returned. Usually they’re either drunk, mentally ill or both, and my response is to leave them alone and be glad I’m not them.

Bystander effect states not necessarily because everyone thinks someone else called & there’s no need for them to call also.

…& how you die. Naturally, including from disease & the numbers go down. Unnaturally, homicide, car wreck, LODD, etc. the numbers can go way up.

Can you PM me location of that magic fountain.

Aww, c’mon now, there’s lots of people who don’t follow sports who have funerals.

Tootsie rolls are good for making cavities and pulling out fillings- no thanks.

If the Banana bread has chocolate chips I love it, Otherwise- meh.

My view is, Davidson (1) didn’t intend to utter a slur and (2) he apologized for something he didn’t intend to do, after he did it. That’s enough. period. Case closed.

FYI, the poll error is resolved, so you can vote on more than 2 items now. So the five people who didn’t pay attention to my post have had their votes reset.

Uno poll, basically what I was trying to get at is: do you play by the Official Rules which state you can match the color OR the number, or do you play the common “house” variant where you must match the color AND match or increase the number, OR match the number but change the color.

I suppose I could have just asked that.

We don’t house rule it, so all are playable. In fact, I’d never heard of that rule before this. Does it make the game better?

I’m also puzzled by the people who didn’t pick “I don’t know the game”, but (given the usual rule, and/or your house rule) they picked both red 2 and red 7, but not blue 4.

we just play by the rules, having never heard of the “common’“ variant.

Same here.

I played Uno a lot as a kid but have since forgotten everything about it. I chose “I don’t know this game” (anymore).

I played UNO as a kid, haven’t played in years, and don’t know the rules. So i skipped the poll. “I don’t know the game” isn’t really accurate, and it’s also not an interesting answer.

I’m curious, but my suspicion is that it makes the game a lot longer, as it would make it a lot more likely that a player would need to draw cards in order to have a playable match. Under the standard rules, you could play on “Red 4” any Red card, any 4, as well as a wild card. Under this variant, the only playable cards are Reds of a value of 4 or greater, and wild cards.

I’m Lawful Neutral. I play by the written rules! Last time I played though was about a year ago, when I was visiting my brother and mother, and was playing with my 13 (going on 30) year old niece and one of her friends. We also played Monopoly and Clue.

Watches - I use a comparatively inexpensive smartwatch, currently the TicWatch Pro Enduro. This is my third TicWatch, and while I’d really prefer some of the other models, I can’t deny that they’re generally half to a third of the better name brands (Samsung, or more recently Pixel) and do nearly as well on the Pro line.

Like others, I use it to get useful information that I’d otherwise have to get my phone out of my pocket for - the time, the date, outside weather, control of my current playlist to my wireless earbuds (yes, there are on-bud controls but they are inconsistent), and I use it to monitor my steps and give reminders to get up and move!

I also have (and use) a file/book reader app, which was useful back when I was working in an office and you were prohibited from having a phone, book, etc. out to read during dead time, because it looked unproductive. Yes, I was cheating, and no, I maintained performance. Not doing that now, but it was nice. Still easier to read on my tablet (ideal) or phone, but that brings up…

Bedstand. I voted for “I do most of my reading on a screen these days”. Historically, it would have been 2-3 at a time, generally three: whatever I was actively reading, my next planned read, and an “old favorite” to read in case I just wanted to relax before bed and didn’t want to get too involved in the current book to the point of “3am!!! Dammit, I have to get up for work in 4 hours!!!”.

But in an age where I have multiple kindles, Android tablets, and a phone (+watch!) to read on, it’s so much more considerate to my lovely wife to read a tablet in dark mode, and not have the beside light on to all hours, especially since she gets up before 5am!

This. I know the game but haven’t played in so long I forgot how w/o a quick refresher

Many casual Monopoly players are surprised by many things that arent in the rules- piling $$ on Free parking for example.

If you count browsing the web (including the SDMB) i do most of my reading on my phone. If you only count books, and similar (short stories, etc.) then i do most of my reading on a Kobo e-reader.
