Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 3)

Yeah, it’s doubly lame.

See you next Tuesday is a standard way of referring to a certain four letter word. And “time” works as well as Tuesday

Oh. Oh! I totally missed that.

I’d phrase it as “…works as poorly…,” but whatever.

Really?! I never would have seen that.

Sounds like something Mike Hunt made up.

This will help explain the “I’m British” option.

James Joyce got it: “See you in tea.” Nonsensical, but at least all the letter names are approximated. (This is in the “wordorigins” link cited above).

My cats sleep with me, over me when it’s cold, next to me or my wife when it’s not.
My dog is too big or he would probably sleep in the bed with us too

I marked the “I don’t care…” and “Snuggly” options, because they are snuggly but sometimes I have to remove them because they are making me uncomfortable, they come back a few minutes later but I’m usually asleep by then.

Pets not allowed in the bedroom.

“I’m going to make it cooler/hotter”

I’m afraid that if I let our rats sleep in our bed, we’d wake up with rat pancakes in the morning. So “unhygienic” for them, I guess? Also, since they’re nocturnal, they probably keep us awake all night.

Cars: If all else is equal, choosing the car that is already depreciated is a better value. This literally just happened to me - I traded in for a 5 year old Jeep with only 7K miles on it instead buying a new one under warranty.

Pets: My dogs sleep where they want. Sometimes that’s in the bed with us. Sometimes it’s in the dog beds in the bedroom.

AC: My central AC is controlled by a thermostat so I turn the thermostat down to make it cooler - the AC is not directly controlled so there is no up or down. If it’s a window unit or a portable (like in my office) I turn the AC up to make it cooler.

I’m mildly allergic to the cats, so they aren’t allowed in the bedroom. Is that “unhygienic”? (I selected “not in the bedroom”, but the poll allows multiple selections.)

“All else equal” is carrying an awful lot of weight here. Older cars, even luxury, will have a lot of additional upkeep/repair costs, most likely higher gas costs, and many fewer safety features. On the other hand, part of your insurance premium will be much less, even if you insure it for non-liability claims at all. Also, the desire to keep a car rather than ever selling it changes the math as well.

See you next Tuesday has been in use since at least 1989 so I really don’t feel like I need to defend it. It may not make sense but the letter Q doesn’t make sense and we still use it.

I was responding to the way the poll was phrased. Nothing is ever equal when choosing a car. There are a lot of arguments for buying used. Technology is the only argument for buying new, and it catches up to you within the first year or two. As phrased, purchase price is the only constant. That’s a bad way to buy a car.

Mr. Mallard is mildly allergic: no cats on the bed. If it were just me, yes, animals everywhere!

Ain’t got no pet, therefore, ain’t got no vote.

mmm

Sorry – I never meant to put you on the spot. Not about you at all. Language does what language does. All good. Maybe it’s my ADHD that makes me annoyed when two methods are employed in a single expression – rather like how some are annoyed when a word blends Latin and Greek roots (television, automobile, sociopath).

Time to move on…thanks for being patient with me…

I answered for the cats; three out of four of whom usually sleep on my bed at least part of the night, and the fourth one sometimes.

The dog, however, is not allowed in the bedroom. This is partly because it would make two of the cats very unhappy; and also because it would make me uncomfortable. The dog is larger than all four cats together, often has dog breath, and likes to roll in and to eat things I don’t like the smell of. I don’t think letting him on the bed would actually make me sick, so not a matter of hygiene; but definitely a matter of comfort.

My experience with vehicles that old is that it becomes increasingly difficult to get parts for them. Also I suspect the economy car might actually fit me better. But if there were an option to get one a couple of years old for less money, or one a couple to ten years old that I liked better for less or the same money, that’s the option I want.
