Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 3)

So far as I know, the president has never been accused of being interested in my gender. So that one would probably be uneventful. However, I expect that the pollster believes otherwise, so I voted for farm work.

He may only screw in the sexual sense people of one gender. However, he routinely screws over people of any gender.

A street called “Gallows Tree" in the US, especially the South would be a non-starter for me. Maybe if I lived in some small Old West tourist town like Tombstone it might be okay. In the UK? I probably wouldn’t have as big a hang up about it.

I’d want to know the history of the name, and whether there’s any current movement to change it. And… It’s going to make the place harder to sell, too

The town I grew up in has a road called Gallows Hill Road. Its history dates back to the American Revolution, but I don’t think many locals give it a second thought. The actual hill is now the town cemetery.

If it was in the UK I’d consider it a bonus. In the US South, however, not so much.

(Also, for the record, I remember The Barn House. Never actually read anything in it though.)

At the times of my life when I was single I would have a desire to get out of the house, watch a game, have a drink or two and get something to eat. I had a couple of places I would go to where I would sit at the bar and do all of the above. Sitting at a table felt a lot weirder to me.

The bar and booths generally aren’t a good height for me and strain my back. I have no problem eating on my own at a table in a restaurant. I’ll be reading or writing while I wait for my food.

I’m not physically very comfortable perched up high. I want my feet on the ground, and my butt well-supported when i eat.

When I’m eating out by myself, it’s usually because I’m traveling. If a eat at the restaurant, i take a table.

I waffled between “takeout” and “table”, though, because often, if i have no one to eat with I’ll do takeout. But i do that mostly because either i have people i can eat takeout with elsewhere, or I’m hiding in my hotel room to avoid catching something i don’t want to bring home to my husband. If I’m eating breakfast in my hotel, I’m sitting at a table. If I’m eating a real meal at an airport, and not grabbing something to carry onto my flight, I’m sitting at a table.

I prefer booths as I’ll sit in them sideways with my legs propped up.

I don’t really differentiate between booths and tables, honestly.

Well, I prefer a booth, but I’m just as happy at the bar. As long as there’s space and light for me and my book.

If it’s just me, I’d rather not take up a two-top and definitely not a four-top. I’m good to sit at the bar.

When eating alone I’m mostly good at the bar, as long as it isn’t too crowded. When I go out alone to hear jazz I nearly always sit at the bar. I rarely go out to eat by myself, though.

As for my poll:

It’s in Northern Virginia: so, south of the Mason-Dixon but not The South by any means.

The neighborhood (which was actually established in the 1980s vs the 1990s) is off a main thoroughfare called Gallows Road: that name seems to have come from the road serving as the path to a gallows near the county’s first courthouse back around 1742–1752. Most locals don’t bat an eye at it anymore, but why anyone naming streets 40 years ago would choose to echo the “gallows” part is completely beyond me!

I disagree that the street name would have any effect on resale value – around here, anyway – but lucky for me I’m just a renter. I decided it would be a stupid reason to miss out on a good house, and I submitted my application this morning.

If the place has a window, I’m going to want to sit by a window.

If the place has some sort of seating that doesn’t leave my feet dangling in mid air, I’m going to take that.

Whether I’d rather take the food away to eat somewhere else altogether depends on a whole lot of factors.

I’m shortish, and the vast majority of bar stools are really uncomfortable for me. Either my legs are dangling, like @thorny_locust 's and the edge of the seat cuts into the back of my thighs, or if I sit on the edge of the chair to reach to footrest, I can’t sit back. My back gets tired too soon.

If I’m at a restaurant that amazingly has barstools that are comfortable for me, that’s where I’ll sit. It’s like looking for a unicorn though.

And I was just going to post about the Gallows Hill Road that I used to drive by when I was in university, on the way to visit the person who is now my spouse.

As I grew up in an area where most streets just had numbers, I’ve always found it interesting to be in an area where there are just road names. No wonder directions often include barns, bridges and churches - landmarks are important!

It wasn’t in Westfield, NJ was it?

A Gallows Tree strongly implies lynching and other non-judicial hangings. It’s by far more problematic than Gallows Hill.
