Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 3)

How would posters castigate you for NOT voting?

No, I wrote exactly the opposite of that. The first syllable is stressed.

Really? I’ve always heard this as æ (except when singing the song “Baa Baa Black Sheep,” when I am more likely to pronounce it as you indicated - weird).

As for “rhyming”: There are two components to rhyming: syllable stress, and vowel sound. Clearly, the question was about the vowel sound only. To avoid confusion, perhaps future polls should just ask “do you pronounce the vowel in this word like the vowel in that one,” and avoid the word “rhyme.”

Exactly my thought! I always say that if you can’t play hockey outdoors in the winter, you shouldn’t have a pro team! Just kiddin’…kinda.

ED uh MAH me

Ada-mommy

I pronounce it differently depending on what mood I’m in.

Japanese is an unstressed language. No need to overthink it.

Yokosuka?

I am embarrassed to admit that in my head I pronounce it Ess Em Dee Bee, which I did not realize until the poll question. And no, I’m not at all dyslexic. Brains are weird.

I pronounce those two words in a way that anyone who knows the word understands it. Lots of words have different pronunciations. Pronounce how you like, as long as people understand you.

There are two different ways- for example- on how to pronounce Nuclear. Neither is “wrong”. This is the USofA, not France, we dont have a official department telling people how to pronounce and what words are acceptable/legal. Americans wouldnt stand for that.

I pronounce it “throat wobbler mangrove”. So there are actually three pronunciations.

Yeah, but this American immediately loses respect if you say new-kyoo-lar.

Me as well. Maybe because of IMDB?

Because they are right?

Res ipsa loquitur.

baklava, the k is clearly part of the first syllable not the second.

The coworkers who claimed the table were clearly closer to the open table. Expecting them to notice you heading for it is a bit unreasonable.

I knew someone was going to complain about how the syllables were divided up. I actually wrote it your way at first, then I checked the pronunciation guide on Wikipedia, and they had the k as part of the second syllable, so I changed it. Really, the poll is just about which syllable the accent goes on. Just vote based on that.

Well, my favorite time travel movie was not on either list (glad to see Time After Time in the second poll – it’s my second favorite).

Happy Accidents is my favorite time travel movie. Vincent D’onofrio, per usual, was excellent, as were Marisa Tomei and Holland Taylor. It’s sad and funny and touching. Not too over the top. Just right.
