No, do not do this. It is a bit of folklore (along with red, black, friend of Jack).

At first I thought you were replying to this post in the current snake thread, and I was prepared to defend it because AFAIK what @Chronos said was perfectly accurate:

Definitely not anything venomous. Except for the brightly-colored coral snake (which is the wrong part of the continent anyway), all of the venomous snakes in North America are pit vipers, and have a head wider than their body.
