This movie as had the final appearance of the great character actor Jane Darwell as the birdwoman. Remeber his in The Grapes of Wrath?
“I Wanna Be Like You” is one of the most impossible-to-keep-your-feet-still-when-you-hear-it songs ever recorded. When it played on a radio at work once I actually ended up grabbing hands and dancing with a 300 pound usually humorless supervisor ala Louis and Baloo. (Ah Louis Prima, there’ll never be another.)
Mamela from The Lion King is one of my favorite Broadway numbers of all time from any show.
OMG, I never realized that. I loved her as the pompous Mrs. Merriwether in GWTW. (I did some googling and it said she was in her late 80s and retired when the film was made but that Walt Disney asked her personally to be in it because he was such a fan and had always wanted to use her some way; she did it, was overpaid for it, and went back to her retirement.)
I’d add Poor Unfortunate Souls to that list but then I’m a sucker for a Disney baddie modeled on Divine.
The songs from “Pete’s Dragon” were overall pretty atrocious IMHO. Some of my antipathy comes from being made to sing “Candle on the Water” waaay too many times in high school choir, but it really is a pretty motley collection. Although I do confess a certain weakness for the early song with Shelley Winters and family detailing the ways young Pete will be thrashed when they get ahold of him…
The song “Someone’s Waiting for You,” from The Rescuers, is a heartbreaker.
How could I forget her. She is tied as my favorite baddie with Maleficent.
Thought the score from “The Black Hole” was pretty cool.
So much great stuff. I love in roughly this order:
Little Mermaid
Mary Poppins
Beauty and the Beast
Lion King
Aladdin
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Snow White
Nightmare Before Christmas
I’m probably forgetting some.
Musically, the Pocohantas score has some things going for it… just not in the tunes.
Beauty and the Beast gets my nod as favorite Disney score/soundtrack. Great melodies and witty lyrics that can’t be beat: how does somebody go wrong with lyrics like these:
