I picked “Other”. Back when VH1 still showed morning videos and a weekly countdown, I’d see her on and could have probably picked her out at the time but I currently couldn’t say “Oh yeah, she sang [song name]”.
She may be better on a technical level than the standard Disney manufactured pop singer but that’s not a genre I’m into.
I am sure I’ve heard them as I’ve often let my 15 year old daughter have control of the radio. Naming them? Nah.
I do know that when I have listened to her singing I have been blown away. An amazing talent. (I don’t think she’s especially “hot”). Damn what a range! I was equally amazed when I first recognized that that singer was the same person who had played the role of Cat Valentine on two Nickelodeon shows my daughter had been a fan of (so hence I saw quite a few episodes of). She also had a role in the broadcast of “Hairspray Live” and was one of the better parts of it, belting it out right along with Jennifer Hudson.
Her impersonations of past female pop stars in an SNL sketch were something that just have to be heard to be believed (here is a compilation spliced next to the originals), and her comic chops are pretty good too.
FWIW when I’ve heard her interviewed she seems like a very sweet young woman … just so very young.
Not to threadshit, but I’ve never heard of her before now. I’m way out of her demographic. I understand she has the same audience as Katy Perry, but I’ll be damned if I could pick one of her songs out.
But then again I’m not the right demographic for terrorists to try to come after.
Too old, too disliked, no fans, and just plain difficult. Little 13 year old girls are about the limit of what they can manage anyway.
To be fair, they play her music in every place that cuts hair within 3 states of me, so I have heard her music.
I voted “Other” because one time she rocked the Star=Spangled Banner before a Seahawks’ game. Other than that, I know her for licking doughnuts and hating America. That was a turnoff, so while I like pop music I haven’t pursued any of her work. I do feel for her being in this position now. Poor kid.
Not only yes, but HELL yes. My eleven year old daughter adores her. I actually have trouble naming songs that are hers, but I’d recognise at least a dozen.
(I’m sure I remember one with her and a brother-figure mixing up a magic potion to freeze all their ‘friends’ at a dinner party and then creatively destroy the resultant statues - but now I can’t find it. Or have I credited her with someone else’s work?)
Some of us just don’t listen to modern pure pop music :). I say that with neither pride nor regret, it just isn’t typically my cup of tea.
Just out of curiosity I tried to figure out the last time I could name a song by a tween idol and I think it would be No Doubt-era Gwen Stefani. So mid-1990’s and that only because that band started out on the more non-poppish side of the track. If you held a gun to my head and demanded I name just about any other teen idol’s song from then until now I’d likely be a dead man. Again - not a sneak-brag, I don’t think there is anything wrong with popular music. I like old shit like The Monkees or even ABBA once in a blue moon, which was as pop as it got in its day. But for whatever reason the modern stuff does little for me.
The unhip thing is starbucks trying to make up fancy (and misleading) names for small, medium and large. And I don’t care that this rant is 20+ years late.
