When i was in grad school, I co-founded a fan club for a member of the production staff for Star Trek: The Next Generation, on the silliest of pretexts: he had a funny name. As a result, I was able to go to the Paramount Studios lot in Hollywood to meet the guy for whom the fan club was named, and he took me on a tour of the set, and of the back lot. I was also interviewed for an article in the official Star Trek Fan Club magazine, about the man and the fan club.
In 1978 I hitchhiked from Colorado to New York City by myself. I panhandled for a while, and eventually got a job. I lived there for about six months, then grew homesick as the holidays approached. I phoned home for some money and flew back home in time for Thanksgiving. I went to drafting school the following January and began my career as a draftsman/designer in 1980.
For the most part the hitchhiking was fine. I didn’t get killed or hurt. Most people are kind if you give them a chance.
Circa 1991 I bought a new Toyota Corolla. The first day driving it I saw a young woman hitchhiking. She’d been in Pittsburgh for a charity event and her car had died.
She got into my backseat when I pulled over and asked how far down Rte 22 I was heading. She asked that I drop her off at a specific location, and she could walk from there.
I pulled over where she wanted out and waited for her to get out. Her door wouldn’t open. I unlocked it again. She kept trying, then screamed, “let me out”.
We were both panicked. I kept pushing buttons, but nothing.
I got out and opened her door easily. She ran into the night. Turns out a “feature” of the car was childproof locks. I’d never heard of such a thing.
I lurked her while the board was resident on AOL and joined this board July 26th, 1999. I don’t know if any mark I have made, but here I am.
I spent forty two years as a field technician for a fire alarm company. I have since retired and spend a lot of time at my sewing machine making quilts.
A blog I like reading starts with the statement: The only normal people are the ones you don’t know particularly well.
I like that quote. So yes, I guess I am pretty normal around here. That’s a good thing.
I am a bundle of good humor, quick wit, ability to laugh at myself, and let’s not forget the full-on depression and snarkiness that holds me all together. Am I smart? No, just a smart-arse. And that’s why you like me and put up with me. Besides, cats.
I’m pretty easy going. I can forgive, I like order in my life, I walk a lot every day - it’s become a habit, I love animals, I think I’m fairly smart - but not a genius, I love to read, do crosswords (in ink), I love old B&W movies, current movies, and TV in general. I love summer, the sun and the warmth. I have 7 grandkids that I love doing fun things with.
My greatest stress is money.
I don’t think I’ve really made my mark on anything. Hopefully the people that are close to me feel that I’ve brought something good into their lives. I know my dogs think I’m the bomb!
Be glad you don’t know me IRL because I fart alot. It’s not a particularly charming talent, but I have ripped off a few that I’ve been proud of. Like the time when I was waiting in a crowded veterinary office with my cat, and when my cat’s name was called (like he’s gonna respond), I got up from my chair with a HUGE fart, and the lady next to me yelled, “ROCKET POWER!”
I lurked back in '99, but didn’t sign up to the SDMB until '00–my fault for missing the coveted “‘99er’” moniker.
I’m a former Engineer and ‘Render-er Safer’ of most things UXO, but now am a red-Swingline staplin’, coffee-swillin’ Engineer on ‘larger’ items. I’ve been here awhile, but you may most-recently remember me as a purveyor of Cheetos and green chile. I’m also the guy that closes out each of my posts with an attemptedly-witty postscript (50/50 on humor though).
I’ve met lots of great people, and a handful of dipshits. I used to be really active on the SDMB, but as of late with work/school/life, have tapered off a lot. With the turnover of the population here at the SDMB, I wildly doubt anyone I’d personally met at a DopeFest or a river float is still around with one or two exceptions.

23 years of custom siglines, and I still come up with halfway-decent material.
