Do People Hate Anne Hathaway?

She was great in Havoc. Also in “Rachel Getting Married” - which I though was her big breakout nominated role.

I don’t like her much. I saw her live on a late night TV show, and a question that came up was something like “What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you on a film shoot.” I can’t recall her exact words, but she said something along the lines of that something slipped and gave her a cut on the knee. Then she started saying about how awful and horrible it was and how terrified she was, but that it was alright because they had a plastic surgeon on set who was able to make sure it didn’t scar. Through the story, she sounded genuinely shaken and emphasized how traumatic it was. Never once did she even hint that it’s kind of spectacular to have plastic surgeons on call at your workplace to make sure you don’t get a scar on your knee, you know, in a country where many people don’t have access to much health care at all. She mentioned the surgeon like you or I would bring up getting a bandaid from the office first aid kit.

The way she told the story rubbed me the wrong way. The contrast between the “Aww gee I’m just folks” and how completely out of touch she seemed to be with normal life was just too much.

She caught my attention in Rachel Getting Married, which I thought was one hell of a performance. She may be over-exposed (in one way or another) at the moment, but I hope to get a chance to see her mature and grow into some more demanding roles.

I didn’t see this as a product of any campaigning, but of the media blitz that appointed her the Sure Thing among an otherwise largely unpredictable Oscar race. The fact that there is so much more coverage of that race, means that she became ubiquitous through no fault of her own–she was trying to pimp she had in the theaters, after all.

I think she probably wasn’t fake humble, but it’s hard to constantly come across as real humble when everyone else assumes you’re a foregone conclusion and that you secretly know it yourself. Her Golden Globe speech was better.

I thought she was great in that–she hit just the right note. In general, as an actress, I think that she is OK and that she is very attractive; but, in interviews I have seen, she comes off as empty and shallow.

Yes.

I hated Les Miserable, but that is not the reason this “new” Anne Hathaway has become somewhat annoying. (Although I wouldn’t go so far as say I hate her as the OP asks.)

She just oozes “gosh and golly” with a sprinkle of “gee wilikers” and a dash of “oh my!”. Some people might buy into this role of precious, innocent waif, but I ain’t one of them.

I think she reeks of insincerity, trying too hard to be the frail porcelan doll that needs a protective cuddle…my guess is she is more of a nasty little bitch with a vindictive side and would sooner stab you in the back than let you step on her lines in a movie or on stage. Sort of a grown up Bad Seed/All About Eve persona.

Maybe I have been around too many theatrical divas, but this girl is milking it for all it’s worth and only the clueless are buying it…everyone else back stage is throwing up and hoping she really does break a fuckin’ leg.

Here’s Anne Hathaway being deliberately fake with Jennifer Lawrence. “Freezeframe Laugh!”

Sometimes, I think she’s a real looker, and sometimes I think she has eyes bigger than an anime schoolgirl and a big ol’ horsey mouth.

This sums it up for me. I have the same issue with Keira Knightley, who sometimes looks utterly stunning and other times looks like an alien whose fake human skin is too tight.

You could’ve just said Rachel Berry and saved yourself alot of typing.

This is a bit uncharitable. She cut her shins down to the bone, and she got 15 stitches. Her dresser and her make-up artist urged her to see a plastic surgeon. Admittedly, though, it’s amusingly effete to hear someone quoting their dresser and make-up artist. :stuck_out_tongue:

Uncharitable?

Heck, back when I was a 30 year old ingenue, I used to get 30 stitches on both arms every month. In the snow. Uphill both ways.

Has anyone ever seen Anne Hathaway and Sean Hayes at the same time? I think Anne is really Sean in drag. He is not only a great actor, but a great actress.

As for phonies, they are actors. Duh. Of course they are phonies. Meryl Streep and Daniel Day-Lewis are the phoniest.

I’m sure it was a bad accident, and I am glad she got the right treatment. but the way she told the story came off as vapid and out of touch.

Even her quotes in your linked article are pretty insufferable. Does anyone really believe she gamely argued for taking a Tylenol and continuing the shoot with her shins flayed open? Aww gee, isn’t she so quirky and brave!

Thing is, all the complaints aired here seem to apply to 90% of all of Hollywood. They are insufficient to explain the hate she is getting.

And I’d rather have fake humility than real haughtiness. It’s not like she’s Zoey Dechannel*, who actually acts haughty while pretending to be humble. Hathaway acts humble, even if you think that, behind the scenes, she really isn’t.

*Internet is really slow, so I’m not sure I spelled that right. Google is a luxury when pages take 15 refreshes to load.

I was going to post something pissy about how folks are bitching about a physical characteristic over which she has no control. I got waaay too cranky so I will leave it at that.

I find her vaguely annoying, partly because she’s in everything these days and partly because she seems to want to have some indie cred while in fact she is smack dab in the middle of McActor territory. Also, she overacts and chews the scenery.

In the interests of science, I will be happy to take both actresses and go carefully over them inch-by-inch to ensure that we have no alien actresses among us.

Sometimes you just gotta take one (or two) for the team…

That’s why I was so confused when I saw The Dark Knight Rises. I kept screaming “look out Batman, it’s the Joker!”

Man, did people in the theater get pissed.

I don’t like her either. She is unappealing to me and not very attractive, and I hate how she’s seemingly pushed at us as a sexpot. She isn’t a very good actress IMO.
