You know how there’s a gene that causes some folks to think cilantro tastes like soap?
I think I have a gene that makes all wine taste like vomit. Seriously. I try other people’s wine all the time in an attempt to find something that’s good, and every wine I ever taste tastes like stomach acid. Red, white, blush, etc., it’s all the same.
Am I alone here? All my friends look at me like I’m crazy.
Interesting. Maybe you’re missing a receptor for fruity flavors or something, so you get the acid and alcohol from the wine but not the real body of the flavor? I know people who aren’t into wine, but I haven’t heard the “stomach acid & vomit” angle before.
How much have you tried? Genuinely bad wine is awful.
I drink wine, but I have a hard time really deeply enjoying it as I do other alcohols. I blame the fact that the first thousand times I had wine it was at communion. My parents weren’t big wine folks either, so every time I sit down at a dinner table and someone pulls out a bottle of wine I feel like saying “amen” after each sip. There’s nothing against the taste, it’s just I associate the flavor of red wine especially with church.
Thank Og they didn’t choose to use Guinness at church or I’d be a much different man.
I’ve tried dozens of wines from $5 to $25 per bottle and they all taste more or less like alcoholic tannan (tannen?). I want to like wine but I can’t understand how anyone can drink that stuff. No vomit flavor, just boiled leaves and raw alcohol
Probably close to a hundred? Just guessing here, but virtually every time I’m with someone who likes wine and they get some, I’ll ask to try it. They all taste virtually identical and bad.
I’ve tried a lot of wine - even took a class in college - but I’m not a huge fan. Red wine ends up giving me such a headache that usually it’s not even worth it.
I love cilantro; when I cook with it I pick at and eat it raw. I also love wine. My gf and I make some each year and currently my cellar has 110 bottles, hers 70.
I like mead, beer, rum, Irish & Canadian whiskey, I’ll even drink gin if there’s nothing else available before wine. Some fruit based wines (non-grape fruits, that is) aren’t as objectionable, however.
(Fortunately?) I don’t have a sense of smell or a very discriminating sense of taste. I’ll drink anything. Except port; I think that shit is cough syrup really.
I’m partly with the OP – I like white wine well enough, although not enough to drink it regularly. Red wine, on the other hand… maybe not vomit-flavored, but I find it very unpleasant. Although, I have found the more expensive wines not quite so bad…
I don’t like wine. There is a strong possibility that I just don’t like the taste of alcohol. I’m very rarely exposed to alcohol, and am not eager to change that situation.
That said, not all wine tastes the same to me–and the last wine I had actually tasted mostly good–it just stank like alcohol. Also, as a person who has never developed the “skill” of social drinking, sitting around for an hour with a wineglass in my hand taking a sip every five minutes is not my thing, so I drank an ice-cube worth of wine fairly quickly and opted to switch back to non-alcoholic beverages.
