ok, I’ve noticed that people put the aim/yahoo messenger tabs up on a lot of their profiles. I myself even do this, but I’ve never got one single IM. Has anybody ever gotten one from another straightdoper, or is it all just for looks? Thanks.

I have, but only once, and from a poster I’ve never seen post (assuming his SD handle is the same as his AIM name). Nice guy; I talked to him for a few minutes about various styles of art. I’ve often thought it’d be nice if I got more IMs from my fellow Dopers, but then, I don’t IM anybody either, so I can’t really say anything.

About 4 or 5. Must suck to not be popular. I wouldn’t know.
There was an Unofficial SD Friendship Club a while back, and several of us added each other to our IM lists. I’ve got almost half a dozen I’ve never chatted with outside of a conference and one who I already knew before that thread.
I’ve been IMing dopers since June of 2000. Some of them have seen me run naked more times than they’d like.

I talked to Satan two or three times on aim several years ago. I still have him on my buddy list but never talk to him anymore (no particular reason though; I surely don’t have anything against him.)
SqrlCub messaged me while I was a away once and by the time I remembered to message him back (several months later) he had forgotton why he messaged me but we talked for an hour or so.
I’ve talked to Democritus a few times. TubaDiva many times (I think I annoy her), and a few members in the past who aren’t around anymore.

You’re right. That was more times than I’d like.
Seems that a couple years ago, I was IM’ing a lot more of the Dopers than I do now. (or at least, on a regular basis) A few of them and I don’t keep in touch anymore, and I still have a bunch on my buddy lists that I talk to maybe once every six months.
However, I do IM certain Dopers regularly… although upon a quick perusal of my Trillian buddylist, most Dopers on there have been relegated to the “maybe once in a while if I’m bored” category.
(this doesn’t apply to Chimpy or another poster in this thread, of course )
A few dozen here and there although I met most of them through #straightdope, an (unofficial) IRC chat room, or livejournal, where there’s a sizeable SDMB presence instead of on the board itself.
I’d guess that I have talked to maybe ten people I know only through the board itself and, of those, I think I initiated half the conversations.
Yes, I’ve gotten chat messages from other Dopers a few times and had pretty nice (although usually brief) conversations. It really does change the dynamic when you’re having a two-way chat instead of composing board posts. I still haven’t worked up the stones to be able to initiate one, though – I’m just too shy about the whole thing.
Actually, I take it back. I did bug somebody one time to do a file exchange, but it was after I okay’ed it over e-mail first.
Yeah, I chat and email a few on a fairly regular basis. A lot of the Britdopers see each other fairly regularly anyway, say once a month, so its more like a bunch of friends rather than anything else. And then of course there’s the one doper with whom I more than simply chat.
It’s amazing just who you find hanging round in DopeLand…

I’ve only ever talked to one doper on IM. I did write something in that Doper friensdship club thread (don’t remember what, and don’t really feel any need to check either) Thats was ages ago though, and I think someone started an IM chat room, but I wasn’t at my computer then…
I’m a bit shy, so wouldn’t really IM anybody… I really wouldn’t mind at all if people IM’d me though… be a bit surprised (especially since mostly I just lurk…), but it would be cool…
