Ever get an idea for a discussion, or start to compose a contribution to an ongoing discussion, and then think, what the heck!, these guys won’t get it and don’t deserve it?
Should there be a separate forum for stuff that’s just too lofty for the average doper?

Not too lofty, but too emotional. I had a thread a while back that I started about five times, but each time tossed it out after saying, “why the fuck would I want to open my heart to these people?” I’d been getting frustrated will how the tone here seemed to be changing, and how a number of people I’d previously had a lot of respect for had really changed for the worse.
Anyway, that was when I knew I had to take some time off or I’d have a meltdown, so I let my membership lapse.

It’s like anything else RT, some people will agree, others will disagree, some won’t care and others won’t get it. Meh, just another day on the SDMB boards.
Go ahead and cast 'em though. If it makes just one person stop and think, then it’ll have been well worth it. We’re (presumably) fighting ignorance here… this is no time for intellectual snobbery.
roger, you started this thread by basically saying you had a topic of conversation that was just too “lofty” for “the average doper” (whoever that is), and you expected … what? For us to beg you to bestow your great wisdom upon us poor unenlightened souls?
In case you don’t get it, your OP essentially insults the entire message board. Somehow I don’t think people are going to take kindly to it.

While you’re at it, please explain this joke, too. See, to my ears, this sounds like you are saying you are too good to talk to me, which sounds like an insult. Since we are in MPSIMS, I must be mistaken.
Explaining the sublime & subtle wit of roger thornhill would only serve to dilute it, and that is not something I am interested in doing. 
I’m also not interested in insulting other Dopers so I will offer an apology to you. I meant no insult or disrespect with my post. I was merely weighing in with an un-insulted opinion. You said, in a way that had a hint of confrontation to it:
I wanted to be one who said, “It didn’t insult me. In fact, I find this thread rather amusing.”
So although I disagree with you PS, I didn’t mean to insult you. I should have made my post a little more clear. At any rate, since we’re in MPSIMS, perhaps you should have realized that the OP was little more than a mundane and perhaps a little bit pointless question. A question that made a few of us smile. I invite you to cheer up a little. If you’d rather not, why not go Pit Rog for his arrogant & insulting tone in this thread?
Well then, I must be one of those average dopers that didn’t catch the humor too.
The first part of the post seemed to be going in one place, then came this lofty forum business, and it just didn’t seem like a joke. I wouldn’t call it arrogant or insulting though.
In any case, if there was a forum of stuff intended to be too lofty for the likes of me, I’d probably just be tempted to go in and pollute the waters just to lower the collective loftiness of the place.

I think roger’s right. Clearly his thinking is a lot loftier than mine is. At least, I’m assuming that’s why I can never figure out exactly what it is he is talking about…
Look, we all have to operate under the assumption that a lot of dopers are smarter than us and a lot of dopers are dumber, for we have no way of ascertaining if that is not the case. There’s so many of us, that for any subject you might wish to discuss there will be people a lot less informed and a lot more informed than you are. Every time you post to dope you have to decide if dealing with the ignorant and the dumb is worth the gems that might come from the informed and the brilliant.
Sometimes, the subject is such that you feel it is more likely to attract dumbass attacks instead of reasonable discourse, and … well what the OP said.
Pretending there are no stupid dopers is kind of silly. Hell, if you insist no doper is stupid, I will try to be even dumber…-er just on principle! I don’t know if that’s possible, but I can try, damn it!

Agreed. I certainly don’t always understand his wit, but I like him and think this place is better because he’s around. Other than that, my response to the OP is just what groman said.
