I’ve not looked at the girl’s cartoons, frankly they’re irrelevant. For pity’s sake, I wish more people would remember that “Freedom of speech” means that they can anything they like as long as they’re not inciting riot. And none of the descriptions of her cartoons cross that line. Dissent, and lively dissent, is a sign of a healthy democracy.

Just a minor nitpick. At least the one I looked at isn’t what I’d typically think of when I hear the word “cartoon”. It was pretty disturbing stuff.

I only looked at “WWJD,” but it’s neither cartoon nor animation. Photographic slideshow with synchronized sound.

The only defense that I can offer for the people who e-mail abuse to the girl is that they are most probably around her age and not terribly sophisticated.

I know. But what other generic term would you expect a reporter to use for something made with Flash Animation software that incorporates visual and audio in a synchronized format? I’d just call it a Flash animation, myself, but I’m not a reporter.

I also have to object to her being called a cartoonist, or “animation producer”. I’ve viewed five of her works and at best they’re slideshows, with a sequence of news photos and intertitles. Further, she tends to reuse the images within and among her creations. Her work is neither original nor thought-provoking.

I guess it gave the troglodytes who e-mailed the threats a moment of satisfaction, though. Idiots.

That said, I just wanted to support his/her general position that the people who would say such things to this little girl—because of a belief she is expressing—are beneath contempt. Calling them assholes and scumbags just begins to describe the cowardly nitwits. They need a dose of just the things they would like to see visited upon her.

Nevertheless, that’s precisely why war is bad. You might find her animations not sophisticated enough but when all is said and done, what matters is what she shows : coffins and people in tears, as “simplistic” as it may be.
