Do you find Amy Schumer amusing?

I thoroughly enjoyed her SNL monologue. I like her sketch show, but some skits are hit or miss. Her movie was about 3 out of 5 stars.

I think she’s at her best when she’s flipping male/female stereotypes, like the 12 angry men sketch, Last Fuckable Day, PoV Porn, or O’Nutters. There’s so much depth there to explore because it goes to the heart of gender roles in our society.

Some other skits, like the silent actresses who give handjobs or blowjobs, or the abusive couple, those just left me kind of cold.

Enjoy,
Steven

She is pretty funny in both stand up and sketch show comedy, haven’t seen that romantic comedy she did with Hader but by all reports she was pretty funny in that too.

Like her, like the show, think she’s pretty hot, whatever her clothing size is. BUT…

I watched the whole thing, but I didn’t think it was that great, particularly given the effusive praise. In my mind, I assigned the blame to Judd Apatow (whose style I’ve grown kind of tired of) more than to her.

I thought Spy with Melissa McCarthy was pretty bad too, so maybe we’re just living in an era of overhyped comedies.

Trainwreck was an excellent film; I especially liked Schumer’s performance. It was a comedy that was willing to make some very serious points; it’s rare to see a comedy these days that has some depth to it.

I love her. The skit about the panel of women not being able to get a word out made me laugh when I wasn’t feeling super-depressed by it. Which is a good thing, and has actually made me revisit my own behavior.

Love everything she does, but I agree that she really shines in sketch comedy. “12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer” was a thing of beauty, and it was not at all exaggerated in terms of how men judge female celebrities.

Like a lot of people, I first noticed her on the Comedy Central Roasts, where she was great. Her stand-up was pretty good, too. Trainwreck was way overhyped, but I avoid almost every comedy movie that people hype because they never live up to a tenth the hype. (Chris Rock’s Top Five was good. That’s about it. And nobody went to see it.) The second half wasn’t as offputting as the first half and that’s incredibly rare. Most movies these days start off interesting and then run the idea into the ground by the end.

Her Comedy Central show has some good bits. And some bad bits and some awful bits. Some of the good bits are really good. That’s a rave, by my standards.

I’ve shopped with my wife for 40 years. Amy is taller and I know that makes a difference. But I can’t believe she’s a size 6 or 8. Just not possible, even with the size deflation of the past 50 years.

Yeah, I liked the old days when they had brutally honest hype.

Same here. That Nikki Glaser show is even worse.

That was easily the best sketch of her shows. And she wasn’t in it. Or because that.

I saw some of her sketch comedy and thought it was some of the best observational comedy I’d ever seen. Her comic stereotypes were so sharp and well drawn, not to mention hilarious.

But since then seeing her do standup, I’ve been a bit disappointed. Some of it’s great but some of it seems to depend on saying “menstruation, cock, penis, vagina, fucking” a lot and expecting laughs.

Yer basic taboo breaking comedy is funny in small doses, but after the shock value wears off there’s not much left, and you end up sounding like a three year old who has discovered they can get everyone in the room to look at them if they say “poo”.

The funniest part of her show to me is the “vox pop” interviews. Some of the skits are pretty funny, but I thought the “12 Angry Men” spoof was too strained. My least favourite part of her show is the interview at the end.

I find much of her television show funny, and some of it not. Which is exactly what comedy should be like. Push it until it’s annoying or distasteful, then take a step back. My line isn’t going to be where everyone’s line is, so I expect and accept not liking every sketch.

I finally watched *Trainwreck *last week, and I liked it enough to pause it when a friend stopped by unannounced so that I wouldn’t miss anything. That’s pretty rare for me. Even more impressive, I actually liked the weird looking dude from SNL, and found him almost attractive in parts. That guy annoys the heck out of me, so that was quite the accomplishment.

I haven’t really seen much of her standup; I’ll have to go find some.

My first post was kind of a drive-by, so i’ll take a minute to expand on it. I’ve only seen her stand-up on TV, btw.

Sex (and bathroom) jokes are easy to make. They tend to hold the listener’s interest `cause we all/most love sex. In Amy’s case, it’s easy to overlook a cliche punchline because we’re waiting to hear about her next sexcapade.

I felt this way about Sarah Silverman years ago. It was her shocking, trash mouth that was selling tickets. But she’s actually matured a bit and I now have more respect for her and her comedy.

In that regard, I won’t hold her early years against Amy, either. Sister girl’s just trying to make a living and her current shtick is working. I’m happy for her, but not interested.

To throw it out there, I think sometimes I get mad at myself because her sex-appeal and her subject matter keep my interest. Then I realize that there’s really no substance there; i’m just listening to her monologue and imagining sex scenes involving her (not necessarily me). Which adds to my disdain when I realize her boobs and sex talk have tricked me again :stuck_out_tongue:

I think she does excellent work. I’ve seen a lot of comedians use sex and bodily functions for cheap laughs, and I think she rises above most of that lot.

One of the best sketches from her show is actually not funny at all, at least it probably won’t make you laugh. The premise is that her boyfriend is playing the most realistic military simulation game ever made, and as soon as she starts playing her soldier gets raped. It goes on from there, quite uncomfortably driving home the status of women in the armed forces.

Her sketches are her best work. Her roasts are good. Her stand up can be good, and gets better the more recent you get. I’ve not seen her movies.

And I’m glad I can count on a Rhymer to lie ;), as I saw that thread, wanted to comment, but then it disappeared from my screen. I thought I’d imagined it, as I had a similar thread open on Reddit.

As amusing as anal leakage.

Sometimes, but the boring old-saw of flipping roles is so preachy & nagging that when shes stuck doing it, she sucks on ice. Cheap gender humor is as funny as a “dumb blonde” joke and I’d hate to think that’s all her handlers will let her do.

She’s too young and talented to be trying to dig herself into holes as deep as 2016 Will Ferrell and 2016 Adam Sandler.

Someone else’s or your own?
