I actually signed up because I was trying to acqure a copy of a locally produced movie, and the easiest way to find the producer was on facebook. He basically told me, “Thanks for your interest, but, no, it’s still on the shelf.” I didn’t send out any friend requests for six months, and in that time, I was sent a grand total of two friend requests.
Yes, I got one under my stage name. Don’t post much, just keep up with my friends.
I have an account, I do check it a couple times a day. Mostly for the Scrabble games. But it is also nice to keep up with what my far-flung cousins and my Aussie friend are doing.
I’m about ready to un-friend a few people. I’m tired of the “copy and repost”, glurge, and whining. And that’s just from two people in particular.
Yes, and I love it. It’s great to be able to stay in touch with so many people I would otherwise seldom or never have contact with. I have facebook friends from elementary school (states away from here), that time I was in the loony bin, every job I’ve had, internet forums, etc.
Precisely the reason I don’t have one and never will.
Yes, I do have one and I really like FB. I keep in touch with far flung friends and would really like to be able to catch up with more of my friends from the past. Unfortunately, most of them seem to either not have FB at all or, mostly being women, have changed their names upon marriage making themselves pretty much unfindable.
Friends have asked me to join a few times, and I have. But I never stay long. Social networking isn’t my type of thing.
Yup. I don’t really play any games (I hide all game posts that my friends make so my update wall is spam-free) and I use it mainly to talk with friends.
As with Linkedin and Twitter, I set one up an account a few years ago, but don’t use it. Maybe I’m just old but I don’t get Facebook. The interface is ugly and not intuitive at all. The only time I ever go to the page is either when I receive a friend request via email, usually from someone I don’t know, or when someone on the SDMB starts one of these threads, reminding me, once again, why I don’t get Facebook. It all seems a bit inane if you ask me.
The only reason I haven’t deleted my Facebook account is it’d probably take more than the ten seconds I’d be willing to devote to figuring out how to do so.
This, except for the last part about Betterfacebook.
I see photos of my little nieces and nephews far away, get a lot of NPR articles on my feed, keep up with long distance friends.
My family has had some of the funniest, most ridiculous conversations on a facebook thread. 4 of us sisters, souses, nephews etc all chiming in making bad jokes. It’s fun.
I’ve dropped people who were fanatical and I never repost crap and few of my friends do, so it’s all good fun.
…yep, my personal page and my fan page.
Bolding mine.
I meant spouses…
heh. That’s exactly what I meant…
I actually Google searched “Souses” wondering if it was some slang term.
Hope you don’t mind me linking to something off your page: This.
It looks incredibly cool. You say it’s a “Timeline feature” but WTF is it and when can we expect it? Is it going to replace the basic FB homepage? I hope so. It’s really slick.
Nope and don’t intend to get one.
The wife has one though.
I had one about a year and a half ago to see if there was anyone in my old high school class I wanted to talk to (my HS reunion was coming up, and I live about an hour and a half away from my HS town). Long story short, I wanted to see if it would be worth the drive to see these people. I thought FB would be a good chance to see if I’d enjoy spending time with them.
FB convinced me it would be a waste. Too much sappy religious talk, and I decided I didn’t have anything in common with them. I deleted my account shortly before the reunion.
Now, out of sheer boredom, I started on FB again, but I’ve not posted anything on my wall, and I’ve not contacted anyone. It’s there just in case I change my mind, but frankly, I don’t think I will. I simply don’t have anything in common with the people from my past. and I’m not really interested in Farmville or any of the other games.
To those who do like FB, more power to you. For me, it’s a lot of nothing though.
My wife and I both joined when a friend emailed me about something my grandson posted that I was unaware of. Mostly, I find it pretty boring. I think I would find twitter utterly inane.
Yes, since January 2005. I’ve had a Facebook account for a quarter of my life! Here is my page.
It is my only mode of communication with most of my friends back home, and without it I would have never kept in contact with people I’ve met while traveling. It’s also great for updating my current location and posting photos and getting comments on those photos. It’s amazing to see a photo of yourself taken by someone you hung out with for an afternoon in Saigon a few weeks before.
I have no problems with annoying posts on the news feed. It takes a second to block someone’s posts or game notices.
If I didn’t use Facebook, most of my friends and family would think that I had dropped of the face of the Earth.
I tried to have an account to stay in touch with friends who’ve made Facebook their main means of communication, but I couldn’t feel comfortable with it. I was very social in my youth, but I don’t have energy for all that anymore. I don’t want to be bothered by a lot of people from the past, and I like my life fairly private and compartmentalized.
So I never logged in, and I put settings at most private, never posted anything at all on my site, and didn’t accept friend requests. Yet there were all these suggestions for friends, and people were finding me, and it gave me the creeps. Facebook says privacy is doubleplusungood. So I finally deleted it. I can see how people might love it, but it’s not a good fit for the likes of me.
I have one. It has put me back in touch with some people from my distant past, which has been fun. It helps me keep up with the activities of friends and family in a quick and easy way. Now that I have an iphone, I can share pictures with folks quickly and easily. I don’t post much, but I usually read my news feed every day.
