Do you have a 'space of your own' in your house? What five things do you want for it?

This is something I have been deeply interested in on and off for most of my adult life…

I’d like the perfect room-that-is-mine or ‘personal space’

On top of what I already have, my small budget wants are…

A carpet on which a sliding chair can slide freely.

white walls, brown shelves, the right things in arm’s reach.

Pictures, framed, that fit my personality, on every wall.

The walls are all plain, flat, white. (perfect)

A mid-expensive office chair that I can use a computer in and fall asleep in without adjusting the position.

Storage that allows me to keep all the visible space completely clear of functional things (only containing a minimal amount of decorative things)
What five things do you want for that place in your house that is yours and yours only (assuming you have such a place) that would make it/make it better/make it perfect?

I kind of have this little space. It is inbetween my living room and my dining room. It’s not a lot, but it’s my space. Right now, it’s just a desk and office chair, plus a couple of guitars and an amp. I think the few things that would make it perfect would be a new 4-track analog recorder, a new condenser microphone, a few snapshots from our vacations, a good picture of my family, and my new HP laptop (which was ordered last week and will be here next week).

It’s a place for me to play music without bugging those who are watching television or such.
I’d like to make it better outfitted for recording instead of just casual playing.

I have a room that I call my lair. It has a separate heating and AC unit, a phone jack, my computers, my TV, my game consoles (only my PS2 is hooked up right now, though), several bookshelves, lots and lots of books, and assorted other items of my choosing. Most of my owl collection is in here, for instance. The only thing that I really want in it right now is a locking door. The current door is just an accordion door, which means that I can’t really lock it efficiently.

I’m very lucky that I have such a space. When we moved into this house, I enclosed the double garage to make a cat suite. The former tool room of the garage - about 8x10 feet - is now my office. We had cable run out here for the computer. Two walls are bookshelves, one wall has the desk and another bookshelf, and the fourth wall has my hockey memorabilia and pictures.

I love it! I’m not a TV watcher, so I spend most of my time out here on the computer or reading. The cat suite has a sofa and recliner, so I can keep the cats out of the house (thus enabling me to invite my allergic friends over) and still spend a lot of time with them. My husband has his own office, and sometimes I’ll sit with him in the den while he watches TV and do my cross-stitch, which I can’t do around the cats anyway. It works out very well.

There’s only me in my house, but I had a conversion done to give me a study - which sort of counts as my ‘lair’.
I’ve got a computer, a comfy computer chair, a music system, a chess set + my tournament games and a desk.

I have a space, of sorts, but I’m kind of like that spray-in insulation - I just seep into anywhere there’s an opening and expand to fill any available space

My actual “me-space” is a small back bedroom that serves as my studio, and it has oodles of shelves, all my craft supplies and tools, and my old kitchen set as a worktable. I am in the process of saving up some cash to remodel a larger space in my basement (thereby freeing up the back bedroom as a guest room.) Assuming heating/AC, running water and lighting will be to my preferences, with everything that’s in my current studio moved into the basement studio, the remainder of my wants are:

  1. a big cushy chair in which to nap, think, read or pout as needed
  2. a coffeemaker
  3. a small electric kiln
  4. a computer hookup and this computer
  5. a hands-free cordless phone headset thingie. Like Bluetooth, but for my landline.

There are only the two of us living in our three-bedroom house, so one of the bedrooms is mine. It’s at the opposite end of the house from the master bedroom, so I don’t bother my wife by being in here when she’s asleep.

I couldn’t fit the piano and organ in here, they’re in the other bedroom. But I do have my stereo system, computer, computer desk, guitars, 16,000 records and CDs and several hundred books all in here. I have a wall-mounted TV that hasn’t been on since we moved in and the cable guy snipped the wire that the previous tenants illegaly connected up from the outside, across the attic and to a wall receptacle in this room.

What would I like? Custom-designed and built shelving for the records, CDs and books. A soundproof enclosure for the computer so I could record acoustic guitar in here. Sound and weather insulation in the walls. Room for drums. Actually, I’d like to knock out the closets and combine this room with the next bedroom and make a bigger room that would make recording music more practical - but we need the closet space.
