We are closed only 3 days a year (Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving) and close early only on Christmas Eve (to be nice to us) and New Year’s Day (because it’s our least profitable day of the year).
Of course, the corporate people get several other holidays off. To make up for it, we retail full-timers get an extra 8 hours pay each day that corporate takes as a holiday – 8 hours that we can exchange for any day off if business needs allow and if we so desire. Plus an extra 40 for our Christmas bonus – plus whatever vacation we haven’t taken – paid out two weeks before Christmas.
We have it better than the other grocery chains and Wal*Mart though. They’re open on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, and I know from my brother’s bitter personal experience that they don’t get much extra compensation for it.
After 11.5 years of not having Friday off (bank), I’ve spent 10 years having Friday off. I definitely know which I prefer. It would feel odd and constricting to not have Friday off now. I work in IT in a corporate environment, however, and realize that not everyone is this lucky.
My last job I did. It was through a university and it was one of the paid holidays. My current job, hells no. I wait tables at lunch time that Friday, and I work in the kitchen Friday night.
I will probably be drinking when I get out of work that day…
I work for a bank, so their open. I, however, don’t have to go in. It is a paid day off for me. My boss is so cool. She thought there would be to many people coming in, so she put everyone’s name in a cup and drew two names. I didn’t win, but one of the girls that did gave it to me. Wicked nice of her.
One of the few joys of being an independent contractor is, I take whatever days off I want, and my employer just has to suck it up. So I took this whole week off. I still have the same amount of work for November, though, so I’ll be getting paid the same.
I’ve been with the same company for 18 years, and we’ve always had the Friday off. My family is not doing a gift exchange this year, so I don’t even have to go shopping. More time for decorating!
I used to work in the only doctor’s office in town (that I know of) that is open on that Friday. It sucked. Now I’m off every year. I will NOT participate in the shopping mania that day, though, because, you know, I hate people.
I’m off, but using PTO to get paid for that day. To be fair, I asked my co-worker if she wanted the day off because I am also taking off the day after Christmas (my birthday) but she decided to hang on to her PTO for later.
So yay, I don’t have to go to the office that day! (I’m still on call.)
We do have the day off, although that was not decided until a couple of weeks ago. This is the third year in a row that we’ve been given the day as an ‘extra’ holiday.
I have taken the entire week as PTO for the last 5 years or so, so it doesn’t make a lot of difference to me (except that I now have 8 hours of vacation time to use some other day).
Yup, but only because I don’t have classes on Friday anyway.
The more relevant question at my job (full-time undergraduate student) is whether we have Wednesday off. Unfortunately, we don’t. But then again, most people probably don’t fly from San Diego to someplace colder for Thanksgiving.
(Honestly, I wish we would. I’d really like to celebrate Thanksgiving with my favorite uncle, his kids, and their kids, up in Minnesota.)
Nope. I work for the State of Ohio and, despite the fact that everyone thinks we’re closed, we’re open, although we typically have absolute minimum staff. I use it as a day to clean, organize, file and do other stuff that doesn’t get done when people are in the office BOTHERING me.
