No. We were told that its an extra service we should provide to our customers…even though they’ll all be home.
But I’m taking tomorrow off. I have an interview. Three guesses why. :dubious:

NJ State Employee here. I took the day off originally but have decided to work and hope the Gov gives us a last minute reprieve.
And that is exactly why my office is open.
Everyone else in my group has taken the day off, but I see no reason to take the day off when everyone else is out, and I can actually get some work done, without interuption… (and take an extra long lunch )
My office used to be open the day after TG. Then one year I heard two employees bitching about not being able to go shopping. I did a little rant about communication, and ever since then we close down for the day.
I’m working. Since my employer makes financial software, we follow the NYSE schedule, and have only 9 official holidays a year. Day after Thanksgiving ain’t one. And I’m not taking off for it, either. But as a telecommuter, it’s not as bothersome for me to be “at work” between a holiday Thursday and a weekend as it is for some others.
I’ve never been in a workplace where Friday was automatically off. At best, I’d get to go home a few hours early because it’s such a painfully slow workday. Nonetheless, it’s pretty much the easiest workday fo the year to take regular/vactation leave for; in my current workplace, I didn’t even need the customary 1-2 weeks notice.
The hell I’m shopping that day, however, not with the unholy nightmare getting to any mall is going to be, let alone even trying to find a parking space. I’m staying home and getting all those little tasks done that I’ve been putting off since summer. (Probably. )
I spent 10 years (that felt like 100) in commercial banking and of course never got the day off. Indeed, it was a REALLY busy banking day way back before ATMs were in common use. Everybody had to come to the bank to get cash for their Black Friday shopping. Plus, we were open until 6:00pm on Fridays, so it was a longer day, and I could always count on one or more tellers being out of balance too, so I’d end up working until 7:30 or later.
Now I have the day off, but like every month end, I’m on duty. I don’t have to go in to the office, but I have to monitor the jobs and be available - or at least coherent - if anyone has a problem.
I wouldn’t go near a retail store on Black Friday for any amount of money. For World Peace, maybe, but you’d have to talk me into it.
No, and there’s absolutely no reason for me to not have friday off. Unfortunately, I need all my vacation time to go home for christmas, so I guess I’ll show up, though my boss and pretty much all of my coworkers will be taking a vacation day.
I work for a university and we still have to come in. Well, other people do; Friday is one of my normal days off, so I’m not going anywhere. We have vastly reduced hours, though, so instead of having the computing helpdesk open 24-7, everything closes on Wednesday night and stays that way until Friday, is open part of normal business hours on Friday and Saturday, and we open back up like we normally do on Sunday.
We are also banking on the fact that, while things may have been assigned over the holiday weekend, basically nobody will be so desperate as to call for computer help until the last day of the weekend.
Yep, and because Friday is my regular day off, the holiday moves to Wednesday and Thursday.
I love five day weekends!
Put me in the “if the markets are trading, SOMEONE has to be there, and I’m the guy who doesn’t have the day off this year” crowd. First time in my life I’ve worked on the day after Thanksgiving, actually.
Yes, along with every other day of the year, next year, the year after . . .
I’ve never worked somewhere where I got Thanksgiving Friday off. Most of my jobs have been in the financial sector and the markets are open. It’s traditionally a very light and short day though, as many people take the day off (those who are traveling for TG) and the financial markets close at 2pm.
Even my non-financial jobs though – it was a light day with a lot of people out of office, but not a free gimme.
