I don’t even look to see who posts, except for the purposes of determining whether two posts are from the same person. I have no “identity” in my mind to associate with any poster handles. If I agree, I agree, and if I don’t, I don’t, and I pay no attention to who says it.
I have a small list, and it’s been mostly static for years. Only one of them is active any more.
So, those of you who scroll down rather than officially ignore - how do you feel about ad blockers? Because to me they’re functionally equivalent - taking away the content I’m 99.99% likely to not care about, and upping my S/N ratio.
Actually, ads probably add value slightly more frequently if anything
I tried it and discovered that nothing made me more want to read someone’s post than the"HEY YOU ARE IGNORING THIS PERSON SO WE HAVE HIDDEN WHAT THEY WROTE RIGHT HERE SO DON’T CLICK THIS IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE IT WINK WINK" thing you get if they’re officially Ignored.
So now I just use the scroll-past method, and it makes my life less fraught.
Out of curiosity, I looked up my ignored person - hasn’t posted in 14 years. Who know I was so powerful that I could ignore someone right off the boards?!?!
I have 17 people on my Ignore list.
Nine of them don’t appear to be currently active; don’t recall seeing their names recently – some may have been inactive for years, I dunno.
One may possibly get removed but I’m not sure yet; this person seems to think it is alright to outright lie, obfuscate facts, and use debate club type ‘dirty tricks’ in GQ in support of certain agendas (“if it’s for their own good”) but I do peek at his posts now and then and find that on many subjects outside his chosen agendas he does post some good stuff.
Six of them are prolific posters who have something to say about almost everything but never say anything worthwhile. I don’t ignore them because they’re racists, sexists, Nazis, whatever, or have different opinions than mine – only those who post great amounts of worthless drivel and are often just plain wrong when it comes to facts.
Yeah, I don’t ignore people because I disagree with their ideas. If I ignore someone’s posts it’s because that poster is an asshole, regardless of where he or she lies on the political spectrum.
-
Do you use the ignore function?
Often enough. Probably a dozen currently ignored. -
If yes, do you use it a lot? Do you periodically “review” your list and unignore posters?
Nope -
What typically prompts you to ignore someone?
Manners. If someone is polite I won’t ignore them even if their ideas infuriate me. If someone is rude to another poster I plonk him. Life’s too short to suffer bad manners.
I’m pretty tolerant, but I do ignore every one of those stupid motivational posters at work.
I also never put anyone on an “ignore” list, though there are posters whose comments I routinely skip over.
This way I’m spared minor annoyance, though I miss out on the reputed great satisfaction of sneering at the opposition “HaHa! I’m ignoring you-uu!!!”
Goddamn! Why can’t I get this damn Carly Simon tune out of my head?
14 users on my ignore list. All because I thought the were unnecessarily rude in a reply.
I don’t ignore people for having different opinions than me, but you’re probably on the list if you’ve responded to me with a rolleyes smiley and an ad hominem to a post I made about liking cheese.
I love it when they’re attracted to certain threads like flies, and like half of the screen is “This user is on your ignore list”
I have thought about putting people on my ignore list once or twice, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it and didn’t care enough to look it up. I am not a power user however.
PLEASE DON’T INTERPRET THIS POST AS A REQUEST FOR INSTRUCTIONS – I AM UNLIKELY TO USE THEM, AND I KNOW HOW TO FIND THEM MYSELF IF I CHANGE MY MIND – THANKS, AND SORRY FOR YELLING
I have 5 people on ignore.
For many years I never used it. All 5 have been in the last few years, and I know that my threshold has gotten a lot lower over time.
Essentially, if I encounter a poster who is repeatedly distractingly stupid or seems to only be arguing in bad faith, they’re gone.
I haven’t ignored anyone.
Huh. Found I had someone on my list. It was a couple years back, and they were banned way back when, so I just cleared them. It must have been that guy that was posting tedious intractable ignorance that became too irritating to look at.
Other board I visit uses a fancy-ass new setup that has other advantages, but when you ignore someone, they are disappeared more totally than an enemy of Pinochet – which sounds appealing until you try to read posts that are responding to thin air, so you just avoid ignoring people because it is too perplexing.
Yes, I use it. I have subscribed threads set to email me if there’s a reply. I don’t get an email if someone I ignore replies. That’s worth the price of admission right there.
One poster in my entire time here.
I thought the exact thing, only about me, not you.
