Kanye West is a pathological narcissist and I hope he gets stranded on an island where humans are hunted for sport.
At the risk of sounding even older than I am, fuck that. I don’t give a shit about opera, mime, soccer, Kanye West, Raid movies (never of heard of until just now), and about 10,000 other things other people enjoy. I’ve got a limited number of years left, and I’ll be damned if learning about* global culture* is on my bucket list. I’m happy people have found things they enjoy. I’ve found things I enjoy. We don’t all have to know the same people or be aware of the same music. One of the options on this poll, by the way, was “Who?” I acknowledge there are artists in the world I might enjoy if I took the time to listen to their music. Mr. West might be one of them. But I honestly don’t care enough to find out. There is no hole in my musical soul that needs to be more full.
I’m not saying that you have to be an expert on any of those things, but most people knows there’s such a person as Verdi, Marcel Marceau or Pelé. And if you draw a blank on any of these three names, well, that’s nothing to be proud of.
Who put you in charge of dictating the global canon?
But Raid Movies? [GOOGLE] Indonesian martial arts action films? Seriously? Where might I run across that unless I’m into martial arts action films. Which I am not.
Which has fuck-all to do with recognizing a current rap singer or a series of martial arts action films.
Oh, I’m sorry, do you need me to add “imo” to every phrase I write so I won’t offend your delicate sensibilities? imo?
I am proud to say that I have not heard of any of these rappers. I’m not into rap. Nor have I heard of this Kenya West or this “bitch” Taylor Swift that he wants to fuck.
Where do you hang out on the internet that you’ve never heard of them? They were all the rage a couple of years back!
It does. Not recognizing somebody very popular and well known is not a great thing.
I understand, and don’t completely disagree. For the record, I have heard of Kanye West, but just don’t know his music. Like I have heard of Pelé but never seen him play. I’ve heard of Marceau, but couldn’t pick him out of a line up. I"m not “proud” or “not proud” of not knowing Kayne’s music, just reacting to the notion (not necessarily yours) that it’s unbelievable in this day and age and global culture etc, that some of us are in the dark about his particular craft. I understand it, I have a brother who honestly couldn’t tell you who Ken Griffy Jr. is.
Um, in the grown-up parts of the Web? Like here, and some Facebook.
Here. That’s about it since Andrew Sullivan hung up his keyboard.
I’ll bet he’s more popular that [del]Jesus Christ[/del] The Beatles.
Not on martial arts action film buff sites, that’s for sure.
I cruise the SDMB and follow interesting links from many different places, to many different places. Not once has a Raid movie come up.
Even in the Dope there’s been threads devoted to it.
All I need to see is this -

Absolutely zero reason for me to retain that information.
I’ve never seen that thread before. I’m afraid I must apologize for not reading every single thread here because I do have a life I must administer.
Sure. My point still remains… it’s not some obscure reference you couldn’t possibly have ever heard of. It’s popular enough to have it’s own thread in here.
It is obscure enough to have been noticed by our resident film buff once, for twenty minutes, four years ago.
