What do you have? I have a cellphone case with a little slider on the back, thick enough for no more than 1 credit card, my ID, and my insurance card. And it still will wirelessly charge.
Wallet & coin-purse–left front pocket.
Keys, hanky, pocketknife & sanitizer, right front.
Belt pouch for phone, paper & pen, & minor whatever.
Back pockets? Comb & receipts only.
Big old fat wallet, full of cards, cash, receipts, ID, etc. goes in my back right pocket. And I have back problems…hmmm.
I’m now 53. From the time I was 16 until a couple of years ago I always put my wallet in my back pocket. Mainly because that’s what my dad did. But I stopped doing that a coupe years ago, mainly because it puts way too much stress on the credit cards. So now I carry it in my back pocket, or in a jacket pocket.
What does that mean, way too much stress on the credit cards?
Vena vCommute for iPhone 11. It has a magnetic back flap. I’ve never tried charging wirelessly, but they say you can with the flap open.
Being a computer scientist, and cognizant of memory hierarchies, I keep the few credit cards I use often in my wallet, and other cards in the credit card case, like the Costco membership card. Probably should clear it out someday.
One reason I can do this is that I only wear shirts with pockets, and I keep my phone and a pen in the shirt pocket. For gardening I have a T-shirt with a pocket that I can put my phone in to listen to music while working. I’m not very comfortable keeping a phone in a pants pocket.
I was having leg problems and my doctor said stop carrying a thick wallet in my back pocket.
So I bought a boat. Problem solved.
For me it has always been:
Wallet front right - when we would go somewhere crowded my dad would warn about pickpockets and move his wallet from the back to the front - when I started carrying a wallet regularly I just decided to always keep it forwards.
Keys front left.
Phone back right, but most of the time it comes out before I sit.
Anything extra goes in with the keys.
I used to always keep my keys in my right front pocket, my phone in my left front pocket, and my wallet in my right rear pocket… until about two years ago, when I started riding the train to work. I figured it would be way too easy for someone to pickpocket my wallet from my rear pocket, so I moved it to my right front pocket with keys. It’s annoying to have to juggle my keys and wallet like that, but now I can’t stand to have anything in my rear pockets.
When I was putting my wallet in my pocket before getting the passport case mentioned above, it would flex a bit and the two cards from my main bank – Debit and Credit – would also flex slightly. Since the bank would issue the cards for five years at a whack, they invariably would crack lengthwise after about four years, right below the embossed numbers. My credit union card, debit, was reissued after three years and I never had any problems with it.
With today’s cards being a bit thicker to include the chip and no longer having embossed numbers, they might stand up to the abuse I was giving them but in the passport case, they no longer get flexed.
Wow, with the amount of stuff some of you are carrying around, maybe you need Batman’s utility belt. I can’t stand to have my pants jammed with that much stuff in my pockets.
I carry my keys in my front right pocket, wallet in back right and phone in my back left. I’ve taken to wearing sports coats a lot lately, so in that case all that stuff goes in my jacket pockets.
If it’s warm and I’m not wearing a jacket, I have shoulder holster style pockets I can wear. (They look better than most of those in the images.) It’s nice to not have a bunch of junk in my pants. Uh… I mean stuff.
I only have one wallet, but it’s really a credit card case, and it’s wearing out. I’m looking for a new one. (leather, very small.) Or… Was, before the pandemic. Now i just tuck the three or four cards I’ll need in a pocket before i leave the house.
I just leave my cash loose in my pocket. I don’t see any particular value to enclosing it in anything else. And i don’t really understand money clips, either. The folded over bills stay together all by themselves.
Folks who carry cards in their cell phone case, have you ever had de-magnetizing issues? I had a hotel access card stop working from carrying it with my phone, at least that’s what the hotel clerk told had happened.
I’ve had hotel key cards stop working. Although I never carried them near my phone, the desk dude told me the card stopped from being close to my phone. I think that’s their go-to explanation.
Nope - but I used to have a lot of issues when I used a wallet.
The case I mentioned above has a magnetic flap on the back. I’ve certainly had de-magnetizing issues with it.
A sporran.

Not since I started doing so 8 or so years ago. Debit cards are actually closest to my phone in the case. I used to wear out the magnetic strips, but that was from use. Since the advent of the chip, I haven’t had problem one.
Received a leather wallet for Xmas 45 years ago when I got my driver’s license. Stuck it in my back pocket for a few weeks, only to realize I kept getting some serious sciatica in both legs. So, experimenting, I moved the wallet to the front pocket and the pain went away. Thought it was just me until college when others told the same story with some variations.
The leather wallet gave out 15 years later, and lacking time to buy a new one, substituted a nylon neck pouch. That was 35 years ago. It’s only now that I’ve noticed the beginnings of wear and tear. And thanks to this thread, I gave it a little needle and thread and hope it lasts another 35 years.
