Alright, so the BSG fan community needs your help. No one has been able to uncover the source where we can get tanktops like they wear on the show, and I’m trying to enlist anyone who might have a clue. The main opinion is that they must be custom made on the show but looking at the hi res pics they look like they’re mass produced.
I don’t think they’re off the rack, I think they’re built by the BSG costume department. It wouldn’t be too hard to modify a basic scoop neck tank top by cutting the armholes wider in and re-edging them. IIRC, the BSG tanks also have wider armholes in the back, as well, so you might want to start with a racer’s back.
Yeah the more I look the more I’m convinced they really did do a custom job, I just find it hard to believe given that so much of their other stuff can be found off the rack. So I was hoping to find them in some obscure store in eastern Taiwan or something.
Yeah, that’s the secret to costuming on the cheap (sez the former community theater costumer) - use thrift store crap as much as possible, and build a few pieces to create a “signature” look for your show. (I once costumed a very respectable cast of 19 for Much Ado About Nothing for $165. takes a bow)
For what it’s worth, I don’t think they built them from scratch, but did just what I’m suggesting you do - buy a bunch of regular tanks from Target and cut 'em up.
OTOH, am I missing a great money-making opportunity here? Can they (or have they) got a copyright on the pattern? I could whip some of those bad boys up in minutes and have a ebay store by the end of the week!

I can guarantee there is money to be made from those shirts online, the fandom is clamoring for them. If you do put them together, I’ll take a XXL Otherwise I’ll have to hit a friend up. While I can sew on the machine, it’s not very pretty.
It looks to me as if he is wearing a racer back tanktop reversed. Do you have any images of the back of the tank? Surely getting a man’s racerback tank for the ladies to accomadate their bosom could work? I’d say they’d have to tailor the lady’s tanks though.
