I don’t really get into arguments here, but I rememeber little facts about several posters.
I remember the poster who pitted me, but otherwise - nah.
My brain is too small to keep everyone straight. There are a handful I no longer read at all, but that’s pretty rare.
Some Posters stand out in my mind, but mostly for categories, i.e Football fans, Sci-Fi fans, the Constantly Misunderstood; everyone else sort of blends.
I tend not to get into arguments on the internet, so no. There are a few names who stick out as being particularly ornery, or being completely wacko and I therefore avoid engaging.
Edit: Since we’re so active socially with a lot of local-area people, I really have to watch it sometimes. There are a few people I want to just smack from time to time.
Oh, and of course I know Ginger as “that redhead I bought the pot from.”
Not That Kind Of Pot.
Right! Right! :: wink wink nudge nudge ::
[sub]Actually, Ginger sold me a nice Le Crueset cassoulet dish. Cheaper ‘n’ faster than e-bay![/sub]
There’s a few posters that I cringe when I see because I expect something flying my way
Otherwise, I am making a note of the posters that seem to share my philosophy so I can check into threads they’ve started. I kind of wish we could subscribe to posters rather than to threads.
And I notice people who live in cities I’m likely to visit again in the near future.
There are several people I think of positively – as others have said, because of a perception of being of common mind. I’m probably likely to argue with somebody this month and be all friendly the next, because it can be hard to keep people staright when they all come in the same typeface.
I do have a small note on my monitor that says “Don’t help [Poster X]!!” because I tried to once and . . . got an unsatisfactory result. I learned my lesson; no more help from me for that person, even if I have exactly the info they need.
Hee hee. Good think you explained, cause that’s *immediately *where my mind leapt to.
I wouldn’t say I remember who I argue with so much, but I do tend to keep track of who is on what side of the issues. It’s much easier when going into a discussion if you have a bit of a background in your head of where the other posters are coming from.
One of the things I like about the SDMB is that, for some reason, I find it much easier on this board to get a feel for the personalities of other posters, and they feel more like real people to me than people do on other boards. Not sure why that is.
I’m a wuss so I don’t argue much. I don’t have a lot of strongly held beliefs. Hell, lately I’ve even rethought letting cats go outside and whether gift cards are appropriate for Mother’s Day.
But I remember people who defend or support something I write, and after being taken to task by Twickster, I try hard to remember who recommended which books.
I had a pit thread started in my honor a couple of years ago. I basically got a major ass-whup’n. (My only pitting BTW)
I’ve always been curious if I’ve ever gained the respect back from all those people who piled in on me.
Personally, I don’t hold grudges on people I argue with. Ironically, 9 times out of 10 I feel a closer bond with said person after the smoke clears. (Assuming all parties involved can be adults about it)
I’m not sure why that is really.
I remember some posters–Mercotan and tomndebb and sampiro spring to mind. I recognize the “voices” of several others: what exit, aanamika, jodi and some others. I suck at remembering names in RL and here. I also just don’t get as fired up as I used to here. I think some folks lose perspective–it is just a message board (but it is also a community–never mind, different thread). I tend to think I’ve remembered people correctly, only to find that I have mixed up two posters whose names resemble one another’s (or not-my brain can be an odd thing)…
I do recall one poster who took issue with a word I wrote-I think it was in my second post. I tend to roll my eyes whenever he posts. Since I have since discovered that he is a righteous, arrogant and conceited jerk, I see no reason to change my mind.
I actualy enjoy the conservatives on the board most, I think. I shake my head in wonder, often, but they do add variety.
I never remember the names. In fact I don’t think I could name five dopers with correct spelling, and the ones I do remember, it’s more because they have names that are impossible to forget, like QED.
I remember a couple in a negative way, a whole lot more in a positive way. I do tend to notice the other Canadians more, naturally.
Everyone that I’ve had a back-and-forth with I remember. If we had an argument or a pissing match, I’ll remember. But I’ll also remember if we had a positive interaction.
This doesn’t mean I hold a grudge against people (though there are a couple of Dopers who will forever be on my shit list). But my memory is too good for me to forgive AND forget.
There’s a couple of people that, when I see their names in a political thread, I know I don’t have to bother arguing because they’ve got my back.
There are a couple of posters that, when I see their name, I always wanna see what they have to say, it doesn’t matter what the topic of the thread. I always always click a thread if I see Tamerlane has posted to it, for instance.
There are a couple of posters that I know will always be fair and reasonable and kind. They’re probably the same ones that are on everyone else’s lists.
And then there are a couple of people with hobbyhorses that you know will always be attracted to certain topics…transgender issues, LOTR, certain types of movies. These people can be abrasive or informative, but they’re nice to have around.
There are a couple of posters that I always recognize as shrill shrieking psychos who can sometimes contribute in Cafe Society, but will always turn a GD thread into a trainwreck. Either they’re blind ideologues who never got over being disrespected in high school, or just plain babbling idiots. You probably know who I’m talking about here as well.
And there’s a couple that I believe are really evil people, that if I saw them in real life, I’d leave the room. Only one that I know of is still an active member.
Other than that, well, sometimes I recognize names of prolific posters, but for the life of me I have trouble telling apart, especially if their name starts with the same letter as another prolific poster. For instance, I can’t tell Marley23 apart from Miller and Mangetout. They’re reasonable people who seem to have similar posting styles, and they kind of blur into each other. Sorry bout that.
I only remember a few names at all from the boards, though I recognize hundreds when I see them. I almost never remember who I’ve “argued” with, though in the past one or two posters have scorched me pretty badly (but not in the pit – I don’t think I’ve ever been individually pitted) and if I recognize their names, I don’t post in threads where they’re posting.
