Doctor Steel! Doctor Steel! (All Hail our future World Emperor)

I discovered Doctor Steelwhile digging through TVTropes and became instantly enthralled. Basically, Doctor Steel is a self-proclaimed mad scientist/toymaker who plans to take over the world using propaganda in music and video form (with an army of giant robots as a backup plan in case that doesn’t work out) in order to create a Utopian Playland.

In before the haters: Doctor Steel WAY predates both Dr. Venture (of The Venture Bros) and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog. He’s been performing/trying to take over the world since 1999. In fact, Dr. Horrible is rather… uh, suspiciously similar to Doctor Steel, although Whedon and his peeps insist they’d never heard of Doctor Steel before someone brought it to their attention that the goggles-wearing singing mad scientist thing has been done before.

The man is a living cartoon. His music could perhaps be described as a rap/industrial/opera hybrid, and his style has a lot of steampunk and Atomic Age influences. Check out this fascinating fan-made (and Doctor Steel-approved) video for his song Fibbonacci Sequence– yes, a song about mathematics. And it’s AWESOME.

He doesn’t often perform live, due to his robot band malfunctioning frequently, but when he does, Doctor Steel doesn’t disappoint. Check out this live performance of Back and Forth. Also check out how insanely ripped he is, because I can’t stop staring, that’s for damn sure.

There’s also the good doctor’s own video show, of which I’ll just link episode 1 and let interested parties explore on their own.

And finally, I leave you with Doctor Steel’s READ poster.

I like the concept, and some of the music isn’t bad, but the others… not so much.

Honestly, the fact that Dr. Steel promotional postcards and other schwag has been littering SDCC (and presumably other cons) for years- I find it hard to believe someone from Whedons’ camp hadn’t seen it.
