Doctor Who 4x3 "Planet of the Ood"

Well, I managed to miss most of this, but I’ll open a review thread for everyone else.

Not much to say except that the ending deserves to go in this thread.

Good. The moral of the story was a bit heavy handed, but it was entertaining, had Tim McInnerny in it, and some nice effects sequences.

I like Donna. I think a lot of the UK viewers don’t like her as they are being influenced by her comedy sketch show personas. I find her “annoying” character to be a breath of fresh air in the series, and just what the Doctor needs.

Curious to see what this part meant:

"I think your song must end soon"I hope it doesn’t mean what it appears to on the surface.

Well, a combination of knowing who will continue in the series to follow and how the other NuWho series have ended, leads me to believe that the last two episodes will be a bit of a blast.

Found it on Virginmedia catch up TV (wish Virginmedia would put their own channel’s shows on there), not a bad episode, nice to see the back story of the Ood.

I’m sorry to see that Martha’s coming back next episode, but there should be a nice bit of shooting to liven things up and add a bit of balance.

I really love Donna. After all the mooning over the Doctor last season, this is such a nice change of pace. I’m also glad they revisited the Ood, since it seemed pretty clear to me in The Forbidden Planet that the “ethics adviser” was really the “slave master,” and I was frustrated they didn’t follow-up on any of this then.

Speculation based on the last 2 episodes, I am not spoiled for the series

This is the second time a civilization is going to remember Doctor and Donna through the ages. In the last ep, they became household Gods. Now it seems they are going to be the equivilent for the Ood. I’m pretty sure this is going to have something to do with the final episodes, but what? Everybody in the 21st century will know/remember them? View them as Gods? Last year when Queen Elizabeth recognized the Doctor, that was related to the latter episodes–that is, the Doctor does not experience time linearly. The season before that, at the end of ep 2, Torchwood is established
.

I thought it was a weak episode. Besides being preachy the plot was about as generic as they come (pretty much exactly where I thought the original Ood episode was going to go before the Devil showed up).

I really enjoyed it - and I agree that Donna brings that bit of oomph needed to the show (mooney Martha was starting to get on my nerves by the time she left). Saying that I thought that bit with the bad guy was pretty silly, but the ending overall was quite poignant. As for the whole “your song will end soon” - who knows. Probably part of the story arc for this series which so far hasn’t been that obvious.

Next week’s in the trailer looks pretty good, even if it does have Martha in it. I’ll be interested to see how her and Donna interact.

This episode harked back to the Classic Series. Even had a real fan-boy reference to the Sense-Sphere from a 1964 serial. I liked that they did an offworld (no-space ship) episode. Now looking forward to the UNIT story.

I still see Tim McInnnwhatever as Percy from Black Adder.

Well, probably more like a mythical character like Hercules or Jesus.

Second time? I think it’s a reoccuring theme throught the show since its creation that the Doctor and his companions have profound and far reaching consequences on the societies they visit mostly on a whim. I remember the old Tom Baker episode where he met Leela:he had visited the planet before and barely remembered doing so. In the generations that had passed, they basically made him into a god, compete with giant statue of his head careved into a mountain.

It was nice to have them be on a different planet for a change. The old series was usually on different planets; the new serieses (?) all tend to be on earth in different time periods.

Yes, I’m sick of the Doctor and his TARDIS showing us the wonders of present day Great Brittain.
Actually, another thing I’m tired of is a “future” world on other planets that is indistinguishable from circa 2008 Earth. For example, future soldiers using very recognizable contemporary Kevlar helmets and weapons. At least wrap it in aluminum foil or something.

Yeah, it’s good to see that the M-16 is still being used in the…, what was it? The 43[sup]rd[/sup] century?

Tim McInnerny. Took me a while to recognize him. Then yes, I kept expecting him to suddenly change into Percy from Blackadder II.

“A great brain in the shape… of an enormous Brain!”

That was indeed strange. I’m looking forward to seeing Martha. Is the actress who plays Donna pregnant?

Actually it was a Rygellian Defense Forces X-45 pulse rifle. By coincidence it happens to look exactly like an M-16.

I don’t think Catherine Tate is pregnant, she’s never been exactly slender.

I just loved that episode “The Sound of Drums” from last season.

To the ends, literally, of the universe and humanity still has quarries!
