Doctor Who Season Finale - 12/22 - Army of Ghosts / Doomsday (Spoilers)

This is the obligatory spoiler free mouse-over post. Check my next post if you’re looking for actual content.

I was surprised at how easily the Daleks gave the Cybermen an ass-beating. I would have imagined a Dalek-Cyberman matchup to be a little more even.

My question is did any of the Cybermen who were created after the dimension jump (including Yvonne) get sucked through? Unless the material that made up the suit was brought through with the Cybermen, then they shouldn’t have.

“This is not war, this is pest control”

(By the way, I’ll be leaving spoilers for these two episodes open and boxing spoilers for other episodes. Be advised.)

Well, now that that’s out of the way,

Wow. Just wow. That was an amazing pair of episodes. The “Oh my God!” moments when the Cybermen and Daleks appeared on main-universe Earth. I liked this one more than last season’s finale

which felt like a gigantic deus-ex-machina what with Rose briefly absorbing vast Godlike power and solving all of the problems that the finale had built up with a thought. I felt that this one was just more satisfying.I have to say the ending was moving. Having Rose and the Doctor separated like that after two seasons is a bit of a shock. I don’t know if they’ll find a way to work Rose back into the show (though it doesn’t look good.) It will be interesting to see where it goes from hear.

Questions on which to speculate:
[ul]
[li]Who was the bride at the end? How did she get into the TARDIS? What’s going on?[/li][li]Will Rose be back somehow? Micky managed to make it back, but this seems much more final.[/li][li]Does this mean no more Cybermen? I doubt it, but being sucked into the space between universes seems pretty permanent and they acted as though they got all of them.[/li][/ul]

Factual questions I’d like answered if someone with could enlighten me:
When does Sci-Fi start airing the next season? Has it started in the UK yet?

Yeah, but bear in mind, the Daleks have presumably had centuries, millennia even, to perfect their weaponry, in addition to being an alien race and the product of technology that is far beyond human levels. Those Cybermen wer created by human technology and have had a very short time in which to refine their technologies. (As Mickey hasn’t noticably aged since the last incident with these Cybermen.) The Cybermen are beyond us, but not by nearly as far as the Daleks.

I went to the website and ran a few of the videos. Wow! It’s like 1970 all over again. I’d have thought the they would have upped their game a bit re the special effects, but they seem to be as cheap & cheesy as ever.

That makes sense. But Mondas-spawned Cybermen, I bet they’d have held their own.

Good pair of episodes. I would guess the Bride is the next companion. I think she will only be a companion briefly however, I heard strong rumors the next companion would be black.

I think in the UK the third season is scheduled to start on Christmas. We run about six month behind here in the States. I am not sure about Canada.

I loved the “This is not war, this is pest control” line also. Asgardking, are you going change guest to member soon? I hope you stick around.

They left the door open for Rose to return at some point but I would not count on it any time soon. I believe Billie Piper has some movies in the works. If anyone is curious about her singing, she has a few songs available to listen to on her Myspace page. Her cover of “Last Christmas” sounds pretty good.

I would bet we have not seen the last of the Cybermen or even Daleks. They are a convenient writers crutch. I liked this episode, but it sounds like a thread we would have started here on the dope or I imagine many other internet sites.

Woo. Now the US is caught up with the UK.

Until… Christmas Day. Oh well.

Good eps. Especially when compared to last week’s dreckfest. If Rose is actually gone for good then I’ll miss her. But I have a feeling that should there be a demand the Doctor will find another of those fissures or whatever he was transmitting through, wide enough to squeeze her back through.

Another episode where Jackie didn’t make me want to hurl, and I didn’t even hate Mickey, mostly since he brought his pretty pretty boyfriend along.

Seems like they retconned something. In “Dalek” they made it pretty clear that it was Rose’s DNA that revived the Dalek. This ep there was some technobabble about time travellers absorbing “background radiation” or some shit.

Not sure why all the Daleks were sucked into the Void. None of them but the original four should have had Void-stuff stuck to them since they were all inside the Genesis Ark. Same goes for the Cybermen created on this side of the Void, as someone noted upthread already. That is I think the door being left open for a return of both races. Would not at all mind seeing the Torchwood “I did my duty” Cyber(wo)man return. Maybe leading a breakaway faction similar to Hugh of the Borg, except not stupid.

I’m a bit confused as to how the things the Doctor and Rose were holding onto were supposed to be working. The Torchwood woman said they “cancelled mass” to allow for heavy lifting. Yet they seemed to be functioning like simple magnets with no explanation as to why.

Loved the Dalek/Cyberman smack talk.

One of the best departures for a companion ever. And they didn’t even run the credits silently.

I also lurved the Dalek/Cybermen beatdown. The Cybermen went down like chumps, though.

Hmmm, I see a rematch in the future, possibly on pay-per-view in association with the WWE.

As a side note, I get the feeling that the Bride is going to turn out to be a major-league bitch.

Giving they could do what was said, it failed to make sense that the Doctor or Rose could hold onto them against the pull anyway, but if we worry too much about the holes in the plot, won’t it ruin the show?

It is times like this that it is best to remember that Dr Who is a kids show that is great for adults to watch. (especially if we can rope some kids into enjoying the show as much as we do.)

My kids loved this pair of episodes.

Jim

If Torchwood ever airs in North America, it should answer that question for you quite nicely…

No, they don’t, and something of a cottage industry springs up on Earth of attempted reverse-engineering of Cyberman technology.

The bride is only going to appear in this years Christmas special, which is something I consider to be extremely fortunate. She is played by Catherine Taite. One of the most unfunny comediennes around at the moment.

Fingers crossed, the Doctor will realise she a talentless sack and let the aliens have her.

At least that’s what I asked Santa for.

my WAG would be that the Daleks from the prison would have some sort of void goo on them, since that is where they were.

One dalek (the cool black one) initiated some sort of temporal shift before being sucked in, so they will definitely be back.

But they were inside the Ark or prison ship or whatever. It’d be like saying that people inside a submarine are wet because the sub is under water.

I’d briefly mused that was the one which ended up in the “Dalek” episode, but it just doesn’t seem to fit, alas.

Excellent couple of episodes; Rose’s departure was maybe the best ever. Though the doctor really should have known to say that sentence he couldn’t finish earlier.

The dialog between the Daleks and Cyberman was classic. “There is one thing you do better than Daleks. Die.” Also loved it when the Daleks, unfazed by millions of Cybermen, stepped back in fear when the Doctor showed up.

Mickey showing up was a nice surprise.

But the Sci-Fi network prublicity department needs to beaten with stout sticks for giving away everything about the episode in the promos.

Who knew Daleks OR Cybermen could be sarcastic? I guess that claiming to be the supreme lifeform is extremely irritating to the real supreme lifeform.

“The Daleks have no concept of elegance!”
“That is obvious”.

Oh, a question: So just how tough is a Cyberman? Apparently completely impervious to automatic rifles, but can be blown apart by a shoulder-launched rocket. So would a heavy machine gun work? Grenade launcher?
