Doctor Who Series (Season) 4 - Who will be the next Big Bad?

I haven’t seen any of the third series/season of Doctor Who yet, but it seems to be pretty common knowledge that…

(SPOILER ALERT)
…the Master returns. The ‘Nu Who’ series seems to have adapted the ‘Buffy’ format of a season-long story arc pitting our intrepid heroes against a Big Bad Heavy with whom the Doctor & companion(s) have a major showdown in the final episode of the year. Series 1 was the Daleks, s.2 the Cybermen, s.3 the Master. Who’s next? Who would you LIKE to see brought back?

Apparently, there is some speculation that the Rani might be brought back (based on something that occurred in the final episode of s.3 - I don’t even know what that is though, so I can’t spoil it.) But I hope not. She wasn’t an especially memorable villain IMO.

I’d like to see the Silurians / Sea Devils brought back. I’d love to see a two-parter with the Doctor & companion(s) visit the pre-human times on Earth, especially now that CGI has advanced to the point that the show could make passible looking dinosaurs, not those cringe-inducing bluescreened plastic models from the Pertwee era.

Alternately, I would like to see the Zygons brought back. I know they were relatively minor villains (only appearing in one story), but they always gave me the creeps when I was a kid.

So who do you think ought to be brought back?

The Bride.

I vote for the Valeyard.

So what happened to Billie Piper? I saw that she was stuck in the alternate dimension (not really stuck, but separated from the Doctor). Will there be no passing of the torch? btw, I really like Martha.

The Sontarans always scared me behind the sofa.

Whatever comes back, as long as its not the Daleks. Sorry to say it, but I think we could do with a rest from them for a season. The lone Dalek plot wore a bit thin after a few tries and the last story was abominable.

My own view on the Master is not entirely favourable, the Doctor as a bit of a fruitcake I can accept, but not the Master. Unless he’s coming back in the guise of old, I could pass on him for another season.

The Cybermen of old would be welcome, but then that might be confusing for people who’ve seen the alternative universe Cybermen over the last seasons. Some sort of return to the Cybermen before their change to Cybermen, or would that be a rip off of “Genesis of the Daleks”?

Who is left from my childhood then? Sil?

The way they’ve been playing up the Doctor’s “dark side” the last few seasons, i’d be very surprised if it isn’t the Valeyard.

Sontarons would be good

I was interested to read the James Marsters ( Spike from Buffy ) was going to be in all the eps of the next series of Torchwood.

I was reasonably sure i glimpsed a Sontaran in the “next series preview” fast-montage that ran towards the end of series 3.

Could be imagining it though.

I’m still learning with regard to the old series and am probably not qualified to add an opinion.

That being said, I’m very intrigued by the Valeyard.

I just started watching the 6th Doctor episodes, and I have to say, so far they’re better than I expected. The writing is a little off, but Colin Baker is a pretty good actor, and there are definitely some good ideas there. (Sylvester McCoy, the 7th Doctor, was one of the best actors to fill the role, IMO, but the writing and editing had become absurd by the time he came on. Tom Baker, by contrast, is regarded as the best Doctor because of the writing, but I don’t think he was a particularly good actor.) I see a lot of influence from Colin’s Doctor on the current show, and I think R.T. Davies’ may be trying to do the 6th Doctor “right” with the current incarnation.

Number 6, for those who haven’t seen him, was extremely arrogant and often unlikeable. He could be cowardly, capricious, and selfish, but ultimately he was still heroic. It was a deliberate choice to explore the darker and more alien side of the Doctor, hinted at in the very first episodes with the first Doctor, but it didn’t quite work out, partly because they didn’t create a good dynamic with the companion, Peri, who was annoying and badly acted. She could have been a good character and foil to the new Doctor, but they never made her likable (except for her breasts, which were the best thing about those episodes! She was basically “Seven of Who.”)

I agree with that, and I think Tom basically just played himself turned up a notch or two.

As for a returning enemy - maybe a trip back to Earth’s pre-history for some Silurian/Sea Devil action? I hope the Daleks are given a rest, though.

Here’s a round-up of past villains who may be eligible for reviving. Lemme hear your thoughts on -

the Black Guardian
the Valeyard
the Sontarins
the Ice Warriors
the Great Intelligence & Yeti robots
the Meddling Monk
the Rani
the Mara
Sil
Omega
Davros (but of course, that would necessitate more Daleks, and they’ve run their course IMO)
the Sea Devils / Silurians
the Draconians
the War Lord
the Time Lords (Some more of them might’ve survived, and they’d probably be pretty damned pissed at the Doctor for destroying his own race. If they caught up to him again, there’d be no mere exile to mid-20th century Earth, this time.)

Reading your list I’m thinking that the Time Lords are going to have to be restored at some point. The kids of the UK have just had a quick update on some of the backstory (and of course an introduction to another Time Lord) so I’m guessing the season 4 arc is to do with the offscreen Time War. Ugh, that’ll mean Daleks.

As soon as I saw her name I just kept thinking breasts until I came to the end of the paragraph and saw you mentioned them yourself  Her successor Mel didn’t even have that to her name.

Yeah, Sil, nasty little bugger played so well by Nabil Shaban. Possibly too close looking to the one off nasty designed by some twelve year old for the series, but a much better character. I guess you could apply him to any plot that requires the evil capitalistic squeezing of a populace, get the actor back with that loathsome laugh he developed for the character and it would surely be a winner.

Bring back the Brigadier! Nobody could face an alien menace with a twitch of his moustache, a haf-raised eyebrow and a weary sigh at the Doctor’s antics like Brigadier Alastair Lethbridge-Stuart. Although Torchwood doesn’t really seem to exist in continuity with UNIT: if Torchwood was founded in 1879, where was this shadowy organisation in the early 70’s when the quarries of South-East England were being menaced by paper-mache monsters every other week? UNIT did make a brief appearance, sans Brigadier, in “The Christmas Invasion”, but they chiefly served to stand around and get killed until Torchwood could prep their death-ray.

I’d like to see the Ice Warriors again but although RTD says he likes them, he didn’t want to bring them back for season 3 at least.
