With Luke (from Sarah Jane - companion and spinoff) it was a life save, with Martha (companion) it was a life save and referenced wedding (she had unrequited love issues) with Mickey (sorta companion) (he had unrequited love issues), with Donna (companion) it was wedding (she had unrequited love issues), with Rose (companion) it was a past visit (she’s unaccessible in parallel universe), with Jack (companion and spinoff) they couldn’t do life save since he’s invulnerable or wedding since his spinoff will continue, so they had him findca new fling to mend his broken (Ianto dead, Jack fled) heart. Make it Alonso in a spacebar to allow maximum cameo + “alonsi Alonso reference”.
That said probably won’t be more than a fling since he’s a lead in his own series now - Being Human. Though I think his gf in that series was cactus lady in this episode…
I wonder why she didn’t get with stuttering library planet guy as foreshadowed…
I agree, besides Rassilon has always been an ambiguous character, it is stated in the Five Doctors that he was immortal and there was uncertainty about whether he closed down the Death Zone or was involved in organising the games there.
Also, but not canon, Rassilon was definitely a villain in the Virgin Novels and the Big Finish Audio Plays.
Yeah, great show, too. Series 2 is ready to go, and should begin airing in a week or so. It’s a small show though, and if there’s a series 3, it probably won’t take much time out of the actor’s year.
OTOH, I’m not sure how they’d work Alonso into Torchwood. It’d be a bit strange if Jack came back to Torchwood with a new boyfriend in tow.
Just trivia, but the Luke save was essentially a PSA for looking both ways before crossing a street. It turns out one of Russel Davies’ peeves is actors, and especially kid actors, crossing streets without looking both ways, because streets are always blocked off while shooting so people don’t have to be as careful.
I’m curious about Martha’s save though. Was it just dramatic coincidence he was there at the right time, or did he have foreknowledge somehow that Martha dies at that time and place?
I imagine the same amount as knowledge as he did for saving Luke or knowing Jack was in that bar or knowing that whats her face was doing a book signing.
Did anyone get slightly Daisy Steiner-vibes from Verity Newman? Nurse Redfern was nothing at all like Daisy, but something about Verity got me thinking “Skip to the end!”
A friend brought up an interesting point. The Tenth Doctor is actually alive someplace. For example, if he appeared in 2024 to help John F Kennedy’s great-great granddaughter reveal the truth behind the assassination. That event will still happen. Fourteen years from now, he’ll be running around helping as he always does.
In a way, all the prior doctors could pop up at any time. Whenever the Tardis landed at an event that occurs in the future.
Bad news for David Tennant. He thought he was done playing the Doctor. There’s always a chance of an another Three Doctors special with Eccleston, Tennant and the new guy.
Heh, good point, that never really occurred to me. Plus there’s still 10.2 in the parallel universe with Rose. If they ever wanted to bring back David Tennant for a special some years down the line, there are plenty of ways to make it work.
Tennant has said he wouldn’t be averse to coming back for such an episode if it came up, as long as the suit still fit.
I’d like to see something like that. I think Nine would put Ten in a headlock and give him noogies for being so maudlin about regenerating. “What’s all this ‘I don’t want to go’ crap? Man up! You didn’t see me whining about dying and becoming you, now did ya?”
Hell, what would be wrong with also including Sylvester McCoy, Colin Baker, and Peter Davison? Yeah, they’re older now, but Patrick Troughton did an episode with Colin Baker about 20 years after playing the doctor.
Is it wrong of me to want Paul McGann to make an appearance?
Somehow I doubt Christopher Eccleston will be coming back. I have the feeling that he was a little embarrassed by the role, or at list uncomfortable with it. His performance seemed a little detached to me, and his interviews a bit unenthusiastic. (Although I’m sure that’s in part the contrast to Tennant’s obvious glee – I started watching the first two seasons simultaneously, when one was on Sci Fi and one was on BBC America.)
To which Tennant could reply, “Have you looked at us?”
Sure, a Doctor could show up anywhere, from any time. But the Doctor always knows where and when he’s been, and doesn’t cross his own time-line when he can avoid it. I don’t know if you saw it, but there was a mini-episode called Time Crash where Tennant and Peter Davison blundered into each other, thanks to some timey-whimey stuff.
