Doctor Who vs <your pick>: Doctor loses

The Doctor has beaten a lot of powerful enemies against long odds. But who do you think he would lose to, or at least be far from certain of winning?

My pick: President Palpatine/Darth Sideous. It starts out as a classic Who adventure: The Doctor finds a formerly peaceful Republic torn asunder by war. As the Doctor investigates, he finds that something rotten is going on: a mysterious evil known as Darth Sideous is behind it all. The Doctor finally unmasks President Palpatine as Sideous and then… well, IMHO nine falls out of ten the Doctor dies or has to retreat in total defeat. Short of a very lucky break, a averagely-gifted psionic with an outstanding knowledge of advanced technology simply isn’t going to fare very well against a Sith Lord.

But on the other hand, measured in pure fighting toughness, the Doctor should have been totally destroyed long ago. Hasn’t the Doctor faced enemies before who could squash him like a bug, but somehow prevailed? Is the Doctor’s real gift gigatons of sheer dumb luck? He has a genius for finding the one tiny thread to tug that can bring down even the baddest enemies. He seems to literally always be in the right place at the right time. The hand of Rassilon perhaps?

Doctor who?

I’d put my money on the Doctor to take out Palpatine. The Doctor’s only “power” is that he’s very clever. As we saw in the prequels, Palpatine’s greatest foe, the Jedi Council, is dumber than a box of space hammers. His entire plot hinged on not having to face anyone who doesn’t need two tries out of three to get their shoes on the right feet. The Doctor would have Palpatine unmasked and under arrest five minutes after the TARDIS landed on Coruscant.

I’ve got twenty bucks I’d be willing to wager on Chuck Norris.

Against the Doctor, or Palpatine. Or both at once.

If Star Wars was a Doctor Who story, then The Doctor wouldn’t take on the Emperor directly, he doesn’t usually get involved in direct violence. Instead, he’d use his technical wizardry to break the force shield, allowing the Rebels to blow up the Death Star

Batman. If he was prepared.
somebody was gonna say it

I’d like to see the Doctor take on Lovecraft’s Great Old Ones, if only so that we could entitle the episode Cthul/Who.

The Doctor cannot lose to a villain. This defies the laws of story telling. He would have to battle a ‘Hero’ to lose. A hero that could cast him in bad light and has better writers. As the loss does not have to entail death, the Doctor could lose a battle of wits against a superior foe. Perhaps matching him against a Gandalf or Sherlock Holmes would result in the loss you desire. Please note I am going for quality of writers as much as quality of intellect.

Palpatine is a villain so through apparent coincidence the Doctor would foil his plans. Hell the Scooby gang might be able to foil his plans; they seem more competent and powerful than the Jedi Council excepting Yoda.

Other nominees:

  1. Doc Savage–smarter and tougher

  2. Elminster–the guy kicked ass in Hell. 'Nuff Said.

  3. Evil Willow–who is hot, from the Buffyverse, and would probably greet Ms. Opal

  4. Cowboy Bill Watts–He’s the booker, silly.

Bill and Ted.

They’re smart enough to create and use temporal loops to their own advantage. The Doctor isn’t smart enough to leave himself little notes, for crying out loud. Even Rose managed that.

I’d say that either Dr. Manhattan or Ozymandius from Watchman continuity would throw him for a really big loop.

If you want to see Dr. versus terrible sanity-smashing entity from outside of space and time that corrupts mortals and forces them to work its dark will, watch Season II of the new series.

First of all, the Doctor avoids physically fighting someone. He always outwits them.

Always. And, unlike Batman, he doesn’t even need to be prepared.

Batman would be prepared for that.

FREDDIE: Let’s see who Lord Siddious really is!

SHAGGY: Zoinks! It’s old man Palpatine!

SCOOBY: Rold ran Ralparine?

FREDDY: That’s right, Scoob.

VELMA: I knew something was fishy when we saw those clone warriors stacked in his basement.

FREDDIE: And then you two fond that ancient Sith robe in his closet.

SHAGGY: Like, we just thought he had some crazy fashion sense! Right Scoob?

SCOOBY: Reah! Razy! Hee hee hee hee!

DAPHNE: So those clone warriors weren’t put there by the Jedi?

VELMA: That’s what he wanted us to think! Actually, he ordered the clone army to create a galactic emergency and distract the Jedi Council.

FREDDIE: And meanwhile, he used his secret Sith powers to take control of the Senate!

SHAGGY: Like, wow, man! That’s some scheme!

PALPATINE: That’s right! And have gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for you pesky kids and that mangy dog. Now, feel my wrath! [Shoots Force lightening from his fingertips]

SHAGGY: [Holding enormous sandwich] Like, now that we’ve solved that case, time for some lunch, right Scoob? [Force lightning hits sandwich, toasting it and making it hot] Zoinks! Like, thanks, man! A toasted sub!

SCOOBY: Rum rum!

PALPATINE: Drat!

GANG: [Laugh]

FADE TO BLACK

** Applause ** Now that’s a movie i’d pay to see

Brock Samson.

He already has. Cthulhu made an appearance in the Key of Time series. Deep ones have appeared in various guises - Silurians, Haemovores, etc - and there have been assorted other Cthulhoid appearances

Doctor Who vs. “The Island”. That new Number Two will make short work of him. Be Seeing you, Doctor.

I’d agree that Doc Savage has a good chance of winning.

I’ll nominate: The Incredible Hulk. The Comic or TV versions. “Doctor Who doesn’t fight”, so give him an opponent that wits & cunning count as nothing towards…let him fight a raw force of nature. A movie Werewolf would work, too.

Except he defeated one in the last series.
