Does Amir Kahn have a legitimate complaint?

I thought it was more sour grapes but I have to admit it is a bit dodgy. After his loss to Lamont Peterson in Washington last month Khan has been claiming that video evidence shows the judging was interfered with.

This news article sums it up: AMIR KHAN VS. LAMONT PETERSON | THE MYSTERY MAN - YouTube

Khan is saying the man talked to WBA supervisor Michael Welsh and interfered with the judges’ scorecards. And Welsh refused to answer any questions about the mystery man or what was said. Khan is also saying the man had no accreditation and celebrated with Peterson’s staff after the fight.

Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory, is there anything to this one? The WBA say they will find out who the man is within the next 24 hours.

See Amir’s Twitter for lots more… https://twitter.com/AmirKingKhan

I’m with you. At first I just ignored his complaints as those of a bad loser but this does seem a little bit dodgy.

Who knew boxing could be corrupt? I’m just surprised the guy was so damn blatant about it.

This conspiracy theory seems to have a lot more meat to it than most. Check out the judge’s scorecard for the fight in this article, where a 10-9 round for Khan has been clumsily amended to a 10-8 round for Peterson.

Interestingly, the WBA seemed to be stonewalling the controversy by refusing to answer any questions about it, but then the WBA President did a 180 today and suggested that maybe there should be a rematch and that the local boxing commission didn’t do its job.

I’d agree, I’m not one for adding fuel to conspiracy theories, and the fight was certainly closer than Khan would’ve liked…a case could be made for a winner either way but…

there seem to be a lot of fishy issues around this. The points deduction was highly unusual, the time for a result is strange…and now an unexplained person handling the cards?

I think a full inquiry is the least to expect.

(but I look forwards to the rematch, someone is going to be furious no matter what)

It definitely looks shady. It’s hard to cry robbery when you’ve fought as poorly as Amir did that fight, but that’s what it’s looking like. He got docked 2 pts for pushing IIRC which is outrageous really, then this mystery dude is getting in the mix with the scorecards.

Who watches alphabet soup plain vanilla boxing any more?

In the entire video, that gray haired judge doesn’t spend one moment actually watching the fight.

A massive worldwide audience…did you have a point to make?

This is so fishy the sushi bar next door had to close.

Even if the mystery man didn’t tamper with the scorecards, the linked news report explicitly states that nobody is allowed to talk to judges during fights, and there is no denying that that occurred. Rules for the judges were broken, period. It looks even worse than that.

A “massive worldwide audience” that doesn’t come close to matching the TV ratings for shows such as Jersey Shore and True Blood. MMA consistently beats plain boxing in the ratings nowadays.

I await YOUR point, however laughable.

Latest news is that the WBA has ordered a rematch.

On one hand it’s hard to imagine tampering right there in front of everybody, repeatedly and so obviously. Wouldn’t that kind of tampering be more back-room?

On the other hand, as Lamar Mundane points out, the gray-haired judge only glances at the fight once during the whole video. WTF? How is he scoring that?

I’m tempted to think that the biggest victim in this whole stupid mess is Lamont Peterson.
My completely baseless gut feeling on this matter is some English bookie plotted the whole thing, but Peterson would’ve won anyway without the scheme.
And Khan’s still a baby.

What the hell dude, Does every boxing thread have to be “boxing vs mma”?
Yes, the UFC gets more ratings, yee haw, aren’t we all glad your trailer gets cable.

This particular issue looks to be just an error transferring the score from the individual score cards to a single sheet. If you look at the other two judges scores for that round in the video, they also scored the round 8 - 10. Also, the previous round for that judge had been 10 - 9.

Still seems pretty shady, overall.

How does it make him a baby to ask for an investigation into what looks like someone manipulating the judges?

I made my point. The only laughable thing is that you manage to miss the point entirely in a one-line post.

Boxing has a massive WORLDwide audience. Certainly over here in the UK and Europe and places other than the States, I can never recall having a conversation about MMA with other sports fans. Most people don’t know what it is and can’t name a single practitioner. Everyone…EVERYONE knows the top boxers.

Your first post was an example of thread shitting par-excellence and you’ve made yourself look a fool. Look at the rest of the contributions to the thread and note how they differ to yours. Relevant, knowledgeable and on-topic.

Come back little man when you’ve lifted your blinkers, there is a sporting world outside of your own preferences you know?

And what exactly would your “point” (whatever that is) have to do with the topic of this thread? The topic is essentially that somebody might or might not have cheated at the conclusion of a boxing match. MY point was that according to all the metrics available to us, a non-trivial segment of the TV viewing public simply didn’t see or care about the fight at all due to widespread disinterest in what has become a corruption-ridden “sport”. Then, in response, YOUR point seemed to be to ask anonymous posters what their point is.

You’re really not helping yourself here with your circular arguments and self-serving responses, NB.

I get the distinct impression that you laugh, however inappropriately, at a lot of things.

Really? EVERYONE? In all the alphabet soup “stables”? WBC? WBA? IBF? WBO? WBPF? Without using Google, name the heavyweight, middleweight and lightweight champion of each governing body.

Says the poster who calls others “fool” and “little man”.

Seriously, grow up.

Says notable poster “UFC Is Sux”

[MODERATING]

  1. UFC is Sux, your first post in this thread was outright threadshitting. That is against the rules here; this is a formal warning. Do not do this again.

  2. Novelty Bobble, you are on thin ice yourself. You aren’t a moderator and “but he did it first” is not an excuse for personal insults, so govern yourself accordingly. If you have a problem with someone threadshitting you know where the Report Post button is.

As there is still theoretically a topic to be discussed I will leave this thread open, but if it continues to be snark it’ll close real fast and more warnings will go out.

ETA: Novelty Bobble, since you have been helpful enough to admit you were trying to use personal insults, I’ve added a formal warning for you as well.

I would also remind you that if you wish to be a moderator, apply for the position, don’t play junior mod.
