Another Doper asked that question once, and this is what happened.
If you have a working turntable, you could just run the line out from your receiver to the line-in of your PC’s soundcard and use audio software such as Audacity to record the audio to WAV, MP3 or any other format. It should then be a simple matter to burn those files onto CD. This is what I’ve done in the past and I plan on doing some more over the weekend.
If you don’t have a working turntable, you could spring for a USB model.
I know there’s an old thread around here that goes into a lot of detail about how to optimize the recording but it’s been awhile and my searches don’t seem to be turning it up.
Another vinyl collector here: there’s a still a metric shitload of stuff that’s either not out on CD, or has been deleted from catalogue and costs an arm and a leg. There was a CS thread the other day, on someone looking to buy an old Shriekback CD, now out of print: secondhand copies are apparently going for $50; I picked up a great copy on vinyl for $2. A Flanders And Swann box set goes for $60 on CD; I got mine for another $2. A quick run through Audacity, trim out the clunks, pops and clicks, and they’re preserved forever on drive and CD. I’ve think I’ve got more vinyl now then I ever had when it was actually being issued.
How about Craigslist, or even your local pennysaver?
Can I have first dibs on your cold, dead fingers, and all the vinyl enclosed therein?
(Long life and health to you, of course!)
Craig’s List ! Better yet- someone local can meet up with me and take the stuff. Maybe I can cover the cost of the CD Recorder device.
That thread, that thread was amazing- and pointed out everything vexing about Windows OS. Such hoops they wanted us to jump through. I bought a stand-alone CD recorder. Uses re-writable CD’s. I plan to re-use EACH ONE until it can no longer be burned into. Burn an LP, pop the RW-CD into the computer, burn in the music, pop out the RW-CD, rinse, repeat.
In related news, one of my cats threw up on my desk last night. If I hadn’t left that CD Recorder device still wrapped in layers of bubble wrapping, this thread would be in the Pit right now.
Craig’s List. I like it better than Freecycle, since it might yield me a coupla sheckels.
