Is there any decent place to sell old record albums outside of an auction site?
And is there any decent way to ship them? I’ve never seen a box or shipping package especially for them.

They would be happy to sell them for you, I’m sure. I believe they do a consignment sort of thing. (ie - you get a % of the sale price and they keep the rest - usually 50/50 but you’d have to check for sure).
I don’t know about shipping them though. I would think a padded envelope with some cardboard inserts would be effective.

My dad gave up trying to sell his record collection. He ended up selling all 200 at a yard sale for $50. Most were from the 60’s. The problem is, is that they need to be in perfect condition and still have the sleeves. Most of his had a few scratches and were missing their sleeves.
Good thing I grabbed that Best Of the Animals before the yard sale!!!
You can take out a classified in Goldmine.
Ask around at the little mom n’ pop record stores in the hipper parts of your neck of the woods. Most of them still deal in new and used vinyl.
Make sure you peruse the various price guides (should be at your local library) so you have some idea of what your collection is worth.
My suggestion: find out what the gems are, and sell them through ebay (or Goldmine). Take the rest to your local used record store, and you’ll probably get a buck or two for each one.

You have to order their paper catalog, but its well worth the wait.
Oh, and send me a list of what you’ve got… I might be interested.
Have any Zombies?
if so email me!!!
Heeeyyy… I asked first!
Dibs: Early Bowie, T Rex, Standells, Count 5, and Pretty Things.
I believe Half Price Books, the chain of used book stores, buys vinyl. Any largish city will also have a used CD or vinyl store. And, as you said, there’s always E-bay.
Bear in mind that if you’re an ordinary soul and not a Rabid Collector, most of your records are probably close to worthless. Collectors want original releases in pristine packaging; audiophiles want unopened copies. Joe Average wants a CD. So don’t be surprised if you’re offerered far, far less for your collection than you put into it. (Sorry to be so negative about it, but it’s best to be prepared for the worst and then be pleasantly surprised rather than vice versa.)
While I agree in part with Wumpus, I’d like to mention that there is a rather large segment of the vinyl-buying public that are neither audiophiles nor collector scum. I, for one, generally zip through the cutout bins of record stores front to back at buy anything that looks halfway interesting. At two or three bucks a pop, it’s worth the gamble. Store owners know about people like me, which is why they’ll probably give you at least a couple of dollars for that mangled copy of “Hot Rocks.”
Oh, and stay the hell away from Half Price Books. If you have anything that’s truly worth a lot of money, chances are the clerk won’t know it. Stick to the mom and pops.
I recently moved and sold off large portions of both my CD and vynil collections. Actually got paid MORE for the vynil, because it’s rarer.
I have no idea where you are, but here in sunny Rockville, MD, there’s a store that specialises in used vinyl. Yesterday and Today Records, 1327J Rockville Pike. 301/279-7007.
I would imagine that there’s either a similar store in your town (or a nearby one), or a quick phone call to Y&T would hook you up.
Good luck!
If you do decide to put them in a garage sale, for Cecil’s sake, don’t use sticky labels or write a price on the cover - sometimes people will buy them just for the covers and don’t care if the record is bad as long as the jacket looks good.
I’ve decided to keep my old records for their potential value as a precious petroleum product. I don’t know if old vinyl can be broken down to anything useful fuel-wise, but right now I’m conducting an experiment in compression with several large boxes stacked in my basement.
Hey there sure are boxes made for vinyl shipping! I’ve bought a few through the mail in my 22 years (dispelling myths about “kids today” and “good old vinyl”) and they came in boxes obviously designed to keep LPs in tact.
Anyway, i did a google search for +vinyl +shipping box and found this site
http://www.vinylrevival.com/packing/
that has said boxes.
As for selling, you should go to the library and get yourself a record priceguide. Put the expensive ones up in their own auctions on eBay (with a reserve price of its worth) and with the less expensive ones, sell them in lots of 5 or so.
Good luck!
I live just a few feet from that store. A couple of years ago, I asked them about taking my collection of LP’s. They had no interest what-so-ever at any price. I had about 600 and would have been happy even to have got a penny apiece. I threw them in the dumpster.
Give me a list of titles and a price and I’ll buy them all from you most likely (even if I don’t like them I can use them for making new stuff). e-mail dalovindj@hotmail.com
