Does anyone actually collect Vinyl LP's any more? Where to sell? What to do ?

I’ve got a ton of vinyl. While my sense of nostalgia makes me yearn for the snap, crackle and pop of days gone by, my need for storage space under my desks has forced me to get an audio digitizer/CD recorder and look hard at the LP’s. I’ll digitize what I love, and then dump all of it.

I cannot imagine the hassle and logistics of trying to bundle together LP’s for eBay auctions. Do people actually BUY Vinyl ? Is there any market for this? I loathe the idea of literally throwing it all in the county dump.

Has anyone passed Vinyl along somehow? Besides eBay and an amazing place in Pittsburgh that as far as I know is still there at the bottom of Squirrel Hill, I’ve no clue how to get rid of them albums.

Thoughts?

If you have any U2 LPs, I’d be interested in buying them–obviously, I’d pay the shipping costs.

Uhh. Shoot. I did NOT OP this as a sly way of soliciting customers- that’s a bit of a no-no here. Instead, I wanted to find out what others have done.

So, please don’t post in here to make any kinds of deals, eh? My email is part of my profile, any Doper can always email me to talk about…stuff. But please, seriously, this ain’t the Classifieds.

I know there are a few stores in NYC that sell vinyl but I suspect they’ll give me something like 10 cents a record. While that would beat dumping them, I do wonder if there is real value to em.

So, we’re clear? Good. I’d hate to ask a Mod to lock this up, rather than get into hot water. Hate the idea of being in hot water with a Mod. Wouldn’t mind getting into a hot bathtub with one or two, but that’s another thread, now isn’t it?

The first thing you’re going to need to do is catalog everything, which is a beast. You won’t know what to dump, what to sell in bulk and what to eBay until you do.

My brother has more LPs than he knows what to do with. My mom is currently making him move them to my basement (from her house) in prepartion for him getting married. On a whim he took a look at some of the titles he had and checked them against eBay. He found 3 or 4 random ones that fetched a hefty price on eBay.

I’m going to be setting him up on one of my spare machines in the basement so he can catalog everything else. In the meantime, they’ll just sit.

So you can either dump them, in bulk, somewhere, or do some cataloging and try to sell the good ones. People will buy the ones that are collectible, and yeah you will get pennies on the dollar for the rest.

Sorry about that–I didn’t think you were soliciting but oddly enough I was thinking about U2 on vinyl this weekend so when I saw the thread…

My bad…

Check around for used record stores who might be willing to buy your collection. It wasn’t too long ago that every major city and college town had a shop that buys and sells used vinyl; they can’t all have died out or gone completely digital, can they?

I managed to dump a dozen or so of mine at a yard sale this summer for a buck a piece. I also am in the process of cataloging what I’ve got - but I’m a little fuzzy on the Goldmine standards, which I understand the serious collectors use.

The only people that I know of now who still buy a lot of vinyl are DJs. If you know any DJs that might be interested in your collection, contact them. If you care to post what style of music your collection runs to, I might be able to suggest one of my DJ friends.

My heirs can worry about what to do with my collection of vinyl records. They can have my SUN label recordings of Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison when they pry my cold, dead fingers from them!

A little hobby of mine is collecting LPs. I even got a record player at Christmas so I could play them. I realize I probably should have got the player before gathering 50 or so records.

A couple of my parent’s friends have been gracious enough to donate their collection to me.

I sold around 800 LPs back in 1996. I wish I had them now. YMMV.

I will gladly take your LPs, and pay for the shipping to get them. The katzhaus respects and cares for vinyl.

Go on line and see what’s popular amongst the dealers. If they’re in good shape, those people will buy them from you.

Have you thought of www.freecycle.org or one of the alternatives? I’ve used it to offload stuff that isn’t worth eBaying. Better than throwing it into landfill, as you say.

If you have any musical cast recordings, e-mail me.

I am fond of freecycle, there is one in my county. Great idea, thank you ! After I cull through ( and email some of you off-boards about some specifics ), I will freecycle the lot of 'em.

Frankly, there are so many that it’d be a serious strain to get them boxed, into the car and out to Pittsburgh ( a 7 hour trip… ) just to try to sell them to the record store in Squirrel Hill- Jerry’s Records on Murray Ave. Freecycle sounds right to me.

You can certainly make a decent amount of money if anything in your collection is out-of-print and sought after. That takes a lot of work cataloging and researching, though. Regardless, there’s still definitely a market for vinyl if you know where to sell.

BTW, I sent you an email.

My husband still collects vinyl and we just purchased a turntable.

He’s always looking for some old, out of print jazz stuff that you can only get on vinyl so there are buyers out there. Just really depends on what’s in your collection.

Don’t the Mawhinney’s in the North Hills buy vinyl anymore? Record Vault, or something like that. Used to have a store on the corner of McKnight and Seibert.

How do you transfer vinyl to CD? I’ve been wanting to do that for a while.
