Yes, Pepto-Bismol - that pink, nasty, chalky, milky concoction said to relieve stomach indigestion, does anyone actually like the stuff? Since a child the very smell of it had a syrup of ipecac effect on me…I absolutely detest the stuff, yet it remains on the shelves of pharmacy stores across the country. So it must be selling…I just don’t see it.
So does anyone actually like the taste Pepto-Bismol?
I don’t hate it, but I’m not crazy about it either.
My dog, though…
He was 4 months old when we got him from the city pound. He had kennel cough and diarrhea; the vet told me to give him Pepto-Bismol for the diarrhea - two tablespoons as needed.
The dog hated the stuff. He refused to just “drink” it on his own, and I stopped trying to force it on him after the second dose. It just wasn’t worth the aggravation.
He’s almost three years old now and has never, ever been offered Pepto since then, or ever even seen the bottle (which lived in the back of the pantry) until the other day when I finally decided to throw it out. The dog walked into the kitchen as I was putting the bottle on the table. He spotted the bottle, tucked his tail between his legs, and ran upstairs to hide in the bedroom!
I used to tell my kids that it was the “bubblegum medicine.” Because it’s pink, that’s why!
Anyway, they believed it and took it without complaint. Although, thankfully, they never sought it out just to drink. So all you parents out there who want to chastise me for comparing medicine to candy…no harm, no foul.
I kinda like the stuff, myself. Mmmmm, bubblegum medicine.
I don’t hate the flavor, but I don’t really like it all that much either.
Of course, by the time I’m reduced to using it, I could less what it tastes like. Could taste like puree of raw gopher for all I care, so long as eases the burning.
I also really liked the taste of Dimetapp when I was little two. The grape kind. I would probably like it now, too. I wish more medicines came in that delightful flavor.
Dimetapp is still my favorite medicine ever. It occasionally hypes me up so I don’t take it anymore, but when I was a kid I couldn’t get enough. I’d even fake being sick to get some.
I think one of the last times I had Pepto-Bismol was when my tummy was upset and I chewed up one of the tablets. A short time later I coughed really hard and vomited it into the sink. I haven’t had a tablet since, and that was probably close to 15 years ago.
Incidentally, here’s a little tip for when you’re heading out to the bar – warm up with a Barbie Shot: 1/2 Pepto, 1/2 Peppermint Schnapps. Yummy, and the stomach-coating action will help you out later in the evening.
I have always liked its flavor. It wasn’t until I was an adult before I found out that one can buy proper candy flavored like the pink stuff – wintergreen candy.
