Does Anyone Else Remember a TV Show with Andy Griffith and a Rocket?

I was having dinner with a friend the other night, and I mentioned a show I loved back when I was a teeager which he’d never heard of. I can’t remember the title, but the basic set up was that Andy Griffith owned a junkyard and, with two young (20 something?) friends, he built a rocket and, I think even reached the moon. Please tell me someone else remembers this. I think the title included the words “Moon” or “Rocket”, and it would have been on in the late 70’s or early 80’s. Please tell me someone else remembers this show and what the title is! If anyone’s got any links to information about it, I’d be interested in those, too.

Salvage 1

I used to watch it back in high school.

There was a made for TV movie called Salvage that the show was based on.

I enjoyed Salvage 1. A real change of pace in science fiction.

I loved that show! But I was ten, which probably matters a lot.

Was the made-for-TV movie the one where they used a cement mixing truck’s … er … cement holder for the capsule?

Oh yeah! And “mono-hydrazine” as fuel, whatever that is.

They made a point of the fact that the fuel wasn’t a real world fuel.

That’s why they brought the woman on board. She invented the fuel they needed for their plan.

Yep, the original TV movie had them build the rocket (named the Vulture) to fly to the moon and salvage Apollo hardware. Over the rest of the series they had various adventures and wacky money making schemes, sometimes involving the Vulture.

That’s one of the things I love about this place – I got an accurate reply within minutes.

I remember loving the notion of a junkman building a rocket.
