Back in the 70’s hot spiced Dr Pepper used to be popular. I can’t recall the exact recipe. I know it was heated in a pan with a cinnamon stick, maybe a squirt of lemon? and other spices.
I’ve tried making it and it just doesn’t come out tasting right anymore. Anyone remember this winter drink? I think booze could be added too. But can’t recall if it was Rum? I used to prefer it non alcoholic.
Mulled Dr Pepper was what I needed to search for. We’ll make a batch Thanksgiving night.
Mulled Dr. Pepper
8 cups Dr. Pepper
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 cinnamon sticks (3 inches)
In a 3-qt. slow cooker, combine all ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours or until heated through.
Discard cloves and cinnamon sticks. Yield: 8-10 servings.
I still fix myself a cup a couple times a year when I want something hot and sweet, generally to ease a cold. But I just heat the Dr Pepper in the microwave and squeeze in a wedge of lemon.
