I’ve mentioned a couple of times that I’ll be in Alexandria (actually Ft. Belvoir) for 3 weeks of training (15 Jan - 2 Feb), and that includes 2 full weekends sans adult supervision. I’ll have me a rental car with unlimited mileage and except for a possible trip to Baltimore to lunch with my sibs or a get-together with old friends, I have nothing firm planned. Weeknights will be filled with studies, but from Friday evenings thru Sunday evening, I’ll have time to kill.
Unfortunately, I’ll not have computer access during that time, but if any intrepid souls wish to connect for lunch or dinner or a cup of tea, I’m sure we can make sufficient arrangements before I head north. So, whaddya say, folkses??
I’ll have to consult with Mrs. F. first, but as far as I know, my schedule’s pretty open for those weekends. (Aside from the NFL playoffs, of course. ;))
I’d love to meet you, and I’m sure some of the other local Dopers would be interested as well.
We’d love to meet’cha, FairyChatMom! The only day we have free in that time span is Sunday, the 21st. How does a lunch or early dinner thing sound? Anyone else want to join in?
Late lunch/early dinner on the 21st would be just peachy!! Not that it matters, but my b-day is the 23rd - what better way to celebrate than with people I don’t know!!
My only request is that we not do Tex-Mex - but most other kinds of foods are fine, 'specially seafood.
I gotta remember to pack my cheapie little one-time-use camera…
OK, sounds very cool. Unfortunately, being the boring types we are, we aren’t very up on good places to go. We may have to wait until a few more dopers chime in to get some good suggestions for a meeting place.
Unfortunately, lunch during the week won’t work - I’ll be struggling not to sleep in this particularly BORING Systems Acquisition class… and Montfort’s fest will be the day after I leave <grumble grumble>
Anyway, I’m not expecting anyone to plan a gala to-do for me, tho goodness KNOWS I’m probably entitled. I am, after all, me… <ahem ahem> But I couldn’t pass up on the chance to meet some dopers face-to-face in whatever circumstance.
Lucretia I’d be just as happy at a mall food court if it comes to that. The few times I’ve dined around Alexandria, I just went where directed by others… But as long as we can set something by the 12th or if someone wants to trade phone numbers since that’ll be the only way to reach me after the 15th…
Bear in mind: Indecision is the key to flexibility.
Yeah, I’d love to meet you, too! I can definitely be available on the 21st. (I live right near Belvoir, too, so I know you gotta head towards at least Old Town to find all the good restaurants. )
I might make a cameo appearance unless the crowd gets too big. The only place I’ve ever eaten in Alexandria is at the California Pizza Kitchen at 700 King Street. It’s a cool place 'cuz they have about 30 different kinds of personal size pizzas & quite a few pasta dishes.
I’ll check back in as the days count down to see what you-uns have decided on.
21st sounds good to me, and I can get to Old Town quite easily. I can slip out of the house on a Sunday for a couple hours for sure - you guys plan it and let me know when and where. I’ll catch you there!
I’ve been to Ireland’s Own a couple of times - a good friend loved that place… that’s all I know of Old Town
I’m going to DSMC for some inane acquisition course that all engineers are required to take… can you tell how excited I am??
FCM, my dad was in the Corps of Engineers for 15 years, and I know that he always loved taking new classses. He was at Belvoir just about every other year, it seemed.
I wouldn’t mind if the class had to do with design or stress analysis or something I do… tho, I suppose in theory, I could wind up in an acquisition billet some day… Oh well, a free vacation in DC… in the winter… what more could I want??
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
How about Clides on the lake in Columbia? Good food, central location. I’ll turn up too. The 21st is just peachy, cuz it’s the week off before the Ravens win the Super Bowl.
Dang, I’m thrilled with the response - and I’m really looking forward to meeting all of you. While my hotel is in Alexandria, I’ve got a car, so I can go elsewhere - I’m an advocate of majority rule, as long as the majority this time doesn’t demand Tex Mex!
If one intrepid soul will “take charge” or at least serve as point of contact, I’ll be able to coordinate with said individual after I arrive, since I’ll not be able to get to the boards…
