Is that what they say? It seems like what they say is, if you ignore it, it will stop bothering you. ie: an assertion of your reaction, not to their behavior.
Can you furnish an example of someone claiming an individual claiming a single person ignoring someone will change their behavior?
Alternatively, there’s the other formulation of “If we all stop doing this, the person will go away” which amounts to a non-answer because there’s no mechanism to have all the people obey a command.

IMHO, if you’re lucky, you’ll see correlation. It will be rather difficult to establish causation – particularly absent robust sample size (something you may be struggling to obtain here <grin>).
Even then, however, ISTM that you’d want to compare the effects of ignoring with the effects of engaging, either by an individual, a few posters, or quite a few posters.
I find the question interesting, but I suspect I’d be shockingly unhelpful in meaningfully resolving it. It honestly feels like one worth posing to AI, particularly if it isn’t limited to the SDMB.
But they never came back with the answer. And having taken several of those quizzes, the answer is always available. Unless of course, you took the quiz, then misremembered the question.
I never got the answer myself, I didn’t take the quiz. From what I remember a friend got the question as part of a trivia thing at a work Christmas party. He sent me a few he was stuck on including that one. I asked him to try chase down the answer at work but he never got it.
At this point I am willing to accept the answer of 14 karats of gold in a fixed partial denture.
How many posters here have someone on their “ignore” List? They obviously believe that ignoring something makes it go away.
Something I’ve always wondered about. I’ve never ignored anyone (though I reserve the right to change that policy at any time). But I’ve always wondered if that is the default or if I am an anomaly among long-term posters.
Anyone moderator have a clue?
I have a couple on my list, and no I don’t think it makes the problem go away. It creates new problems by making threads less readable. In a couple cases, I have decided that the problems it solves outweigh the problems it creates.
It seems to. I have made a post, then as few hour later someone else posts, seemingly ignoring my post, and they dont reply when I repeat part of my post or reply to them. It just plugs up the discussion.
Depends on what the problem is. If the problem is “stupid drivel exists”, then the ignore list doesn’t help it. But if the problem is “I have to read stupid drivel”, or “Stupid drivel tempts me to respond and wrestle the pig”, then the “ignore” feature might solve that problem.
Frankly in some cases the “ignore thread” option is more helpful than the “ignore user” one (since responses to drivel can be as annoying as the drivel itself).
I know of one case where a poster was so annoyed at me providing him facts that were inconvenient that he promised to ignore me, which solved my problem (since I knew there was no point in providing additional facts) and he shortly thereafter fled the boards, whixh solved everyone’s problem (it belatedly occurs to me that I could have reported him, since he made that statement outside the Pit, but he wasn’t worth the effort)
The point was, he didn’t know the answer and was hoping someone could tell him the answer. Attacking him for not supplying the answer is unfair.
My own personal guess is that it meant something to the staff of a particular company at a particular time, and is meaningless to everyone else.
I am not attacking him. No, I figured out by much Googling that he misremembered part of it- which is easy to do (or the people giving the test got part of it wrong). Yes it is 14 carats of gold to start, but I dont remember the rest.
