Does it bug you when people capitalize your lower-case UserName?

Well, it bugs me a little. I don’t usually make an issue of it, but it seems to be happening more and more often. If I wanted to be called Bibliophage, I would have registered under the name Bibliophage. I prefer the lower-case even when it comes at the beginning of a sentence, like “pH.”

bother me? nope.

doesn’t even bother me when they mistake me for male. (I usually correct them on it)

But, I AM of the opinion that once you establish your preference, that it is rude to disregard that as in :

Hey Cathy?
I prefer to be called Catherine.
Why Cathy?

Huh. I’d been thinking you were male ever since I first saw you posting, wring. I’m not sure why I thought that. Maybe it has something to do with writing style. Perhaps if you threw a few dainty things in your posts once in a while, it would clear up the confusion. :slight_smile:

As for user names, I couldn’t care less if the first letter is big or small. Gotta say that I don’t like being called “neut,” though. :slight_smile:

What really bugs me are the people who choose names that aren’t capitalized!

Nah, it doesn’t bother me really 'coz we hear to fight ignorance right?

OTOH, I am a bit curious on how they mentally pronounce my name.

By the by: bibliophage, I like your postings - consistently good information and excellent sites.

I don’t mind user names that are uncapitalized, but I think it’s completely bogus to spell one’s real name like that, e.g., k. d. lang or e. e. cummings.

Well, then be bugged. I’m not going to not capitalize the first word in a sentence because the username is lowercase. Improper grammar bugs me a lot more than lower case names. So, bibliophage, I’ll remember to not capitalize your name when I write to you, but if I have to say something along the lines of: “Bibliophage, you’re cool.” Don’t expect a lowercase sentence.

Jman

I love that Bob Seger tune “Turn the Phage.”

Thought I don’t recall ever refering to you before, bibliophage, I’ll make an effort in the future, when the need arises, to lowercase your name. I would hazard to guess, however, that damn near 100% of the people that capitalize your name do so out of ignorance not malice.

I for one prefer Ender when refering to me, despite my SN being Enderw23. I don’t expect anyone to know this, though, so it’s not a big deal.

**neutron ** - well, I ** do ** make mention of being a “mommy”, I kinda hoped that it would get the idea across.

I write like a “man” huh? hmmmmmmm cocky perhaps?
** scratch ** my dad (when he had a custom jewelry shop) used his own name without capitalization. I asked him why, he claimed (and one NEVER disagreed with daddy) that it was more “elegant”.

must have worked, he put 3 kids through college.

I don’t really care if people capitalize it.

What I don’t understand is why everybody is always trying to shorten it. I’m constantly being asked “is ‘ob’ or ‘obfus’ the preferred short form?”

Actually, when it comes to my screen name I don’t care what you call me as long as I can tell you are talking about/to me.

It is in real life that this bothers me. My name is “Alexander,” I have chosen to go by “Alex.” I hate it when people decide to call me “Al.” I don’t mind people doing it once, but if I correct them they seem to argue with me!

Them: It is just a shorter form.
Me: No, Alex is the shorter form, Al is an insult.
Them: Well, I was just trying to be friendly.
Me: No, I am being friendly by letting you call me Alex rather than Alexander.

Does it bother me? Heck no. I’ve got such a weird username anyway.

I usually will start a sentence with the lowercase, if the username indicates. Kinda makes me feel odd doing it, because it’s so contradictory to the rules, but then again–it makes me pay attention to the name of the person. That can be a good thing.

I tried mine capitalized, but I didn’t like how it looked–does that sound funny?

No, and anybody who is bothered needs to adjust their medication.

If it’s going to bother you when people don’t get your name right, then choose something simple. It sounds prissy (or pissy) when you correct them.

Same with abbreviations – if you don’t like them, then choose something that’s hard to shorten. Like aha.

Do some folks have a lot of ego invested in their user names? I suppose if I had spent a lot of time choosing a name, and if the caps were a big part of it, then I might feel slighted if folks ignored it. But I’d rather they get it wrong than ignore me.

I like it when people abbreviate mine. It feels affectionate.

::slight hijack::
A woman at work was named Deirdre. She’d get highly pissed off when it wasn’t pronounced correctly. But she pronounced it “dee-AH-dray”. Another friend named her daughter Siobhan, then got tired of pronouncing it for everyone. How many people outside of the Dope know how to pronunce Siobhan?
::end::

Not enough to worry about. There are several reasons why I don’t capitalize my name, but since they’re my reasons I don’t expect other people to live by them. If they choose to follow my habit out of courtesy, that’s peachy. If not, I’m not gonna sweat it. :slight_smile:

Ender - did you have the same problem I did? When I signed up, it wouldn’t let me use just ‘redtail’, even tho’ I’ve never seen posts by anyone with that name (even in the old archives). If I’d only known, I coulda just used a space!

wring - LOL! I thought you were male at first, too! Somewhere in one of our discussions I figured it out, though. I’m not sure why I thought that - I rarely try to ‘gender-ID’ posters - I just did.

don’t you have anything important to get upset about ???
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Years ago, I didn’t capitolize at all. Even though I know follow conventional capitolization rules, I still like to keep my username lower case.

I can’t imagine getting upset over someone else capitolizing it though. I prefer lower case, but let’s have some perspective here.

Nah. I only picked all lowercase to save the added shift stroke when I had to enter it somewhere. I try to remember to type usernames the way that they are displayed, but I may forget and capitalize out of instinctive grammatical politeness (or miss a capital because my typing is poor). However, I don’t have a lot of emotional investment in the name. It’s just an ID tag.

No, it doesn’t bother me. I don’t particularly like being called “porc,” though, but I knew I was setting myself up for it when I chose my user name. I shouldn’t complain, though, as it’s better than “porcy” (how the hell would you prounounce that, anyway). Zenster called me “My spiny friend,” or something like that, which I rather like.

Nope. Hasn’t happened yet, but won’t upset me if it did.

It used to bug me when people did that until I started posting here. I’m assuming the “standard” for posting is to capitalize all first words of sentences so when my username is mentioned and is the first word of a sentence, I’m okay with people posting it as Kasuo.
