Does Biden get along well with Harris? Or, is it true that he hates her, as Donald Trump claimed in last night’s debate? Something in-between, a tense relationship? I had read/heard that they don’t even share weekly lunches any more. There was obviously the narrative in 2020 that she was a token Black woman. Fact check, please!
If Trump said it, that’s pretty much a guarantee that it’s not true. Trump has more projection than a multiplex theatre.
As was said in another thread, a sociopath like Trump believes everyone has the same thought process and lack of morality that they do.
Trump hates Pence; Therefore Biden must hate Harris.
If Trump was forced out (like he thinks Biden was), he would hate, HATE his replacement. Therefore, Trump thinks Biden hates Harris.
That’s really all there is to it.
I’m sure that Biden and Harris don’t go to the park together and hold hands, or go for beers together after work. But the bullshit that he “Hates” her, is just that; Complete bullshit, coming from the consummate bullshitter.
Yes, yes, that makes sense. But it’s not a cite, or evidence of a good working relationship, which is really what I’m looking for here.
And while I can look up sources as easily as anyone, whether due to confirmation bias or something else, I get things like this which only reinforce my existing notion:
If Donald Trump said it, it is almost certain to be untrue. They say that even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while but those pontificators never met the man who can run multiple oceanfront casinos—a business with a statistically guaranteed profit margin provided you can get butts in seats—into bankruptcy.
As for Biden and Harris, it is not uncommon that the Veep is assigned to secondary issues and sent out to handle ‘minor’ disasters and give speeches, which is to be expected because it is a job with no actual authority, a kind of “lady in waiting”. And it his hardly surprising that there may be some residual animosity between once-primary competitors; Reagan and Bush had a pretty tense relationship for some time, purportedly because the latter’s characterization of what became known as Reaganomics as “voodoo economics”, and Bush was never deeply involved in Reagan’s policy development outside of interacting with William Colby and the National Security Council (although he later tried to distance himself and claim that he had only superficial knowledge of the operation).
But Biden and Harris share more than just an ambition to occupy the Oval Office; Harris worked with Beau Biden (then Delaware attorney general) during the foreclosure crisis, and it is likely one of the reasons that Harris was high on the list of VP picks despite a contentious 2020 primary campaign where Harris went after Biden hard. Harris is developing her own campaign strategy largely independent from Biden’s legacy but she also isn’t undermining or contravening the Biden administration’s current agenda (not that it would be sensible for her to do so) and while some of the affection at the recent primary was clearly performative they certainly aren’t Eisenhower and Nixon, or Johnson and Humphrey.
I’ve seen no evidence they don’t get along, and what’s publicly available would indicate they do (public statements and appearances). The most significant one, IMO, is that Biden immediately endorsed Harris as his replacement. If he didn’t like her, he could have refrained from that, or said the delegates should decide.
I was hoping that Max, in starting this thread, had found some evidence to back up his guess by now. Because I didn’t think he had enough reason to even ask about it when he first brought it up.
One thing to keep in mind is that the WH is not a typical work environment. There’s not the expectation that you’ll like your coworkers as might be the case in a typical work environment. They are making some of the most important decisions in the world and having to carry out extremely difficult tasks. “Getting along” with someone in that environment is more about how well they do their job, how hard they work, and if you can count on them when you need them. Whether or not you like them on a personal level isn’t necessarily a factor. Certainly some true friendships form, but it’s not like there’s the expectation that you’ll be friendly and hang out with your WH coworkers. If you get together for happy hour, it’s likely to just keep discussing work while being in an environment where you can order beers. Just from what I’ve seen, I doubt that Biden and Harris are true friends in the same way that Biden and Obama are. But it seems like Biden trusts and values Harris as a part of his administration. I’m certain they’ve had disagreements–perhaps even some that have gotten quite heated. That’s a given in that kind of work environment. The press may have gotten wind of those and written articles implying that they don’t get along. But that’s probably just the press trying to sell papers. From what I see, they seem to have a great working relationship and seem to get along pretty well at events when they are together.
For Biden to not endorse Harris would have been a death knell for a 2024 Democratic electoral victory; it would have invited internecine fighting and competitors undermining each other. However, however resentful Biden may have been about being pushed out (albeit, not Harris’ doing; both in her public and private statements she continued to promote Biden up until the point he announced his intention to withdraw), he ultimately cares more about the tenuous viability of American democracy and making sure that a would-be demagogue doesn’t get a fast track to the presidency, so of course he endorsed Harris.
