President Obama wasn’t invited to Prince William’s wedding and that was a wedding of greater consequence in a larger venue. I think the only foreign politicians who got invitations were the Queen’s 15 other PMs.
Thank fuck for that. The entire Commonwealth dodged a bullet.
The modern tradition is to have a church wedding, followed by a formal wedding breakfast, with a knees-up in the evening. They can only get 162 round the table in St George’s Hall, so some will have to make do with a buffet elsewhere.
Just as long as the FA Cup Final is on the telly in a back room.
The what now …
Many people who deplore Donald Trump were against the nomination of Hillary Clinton. They’re both, er, how do I put this? She’s from Chicago, and he’s from Queens, but you just know they’re both Yankees fans. They’re that type.
I’m pretty sure in the UK (at least in England) the center can simply direct the municipalities to do anything lawful.
What is a “knees-up”?
“Even their time is mean” should not have passed unnoticed.
High-step dancing, as opposed to a more sedate waltz.
The Urban Dictionary definition is closer to the more usual common understanding. It relates to the song Knees Up Mother Brown, which had a great vogue just before and particularly durng WW2, but I see some suggestions that it might be a bit older, and there seem to have been various versions of the lyrics before the one most of us know as a shorthand for the point at which parties start to get a bit out of hand.
Some will welcome him; others will protest his presence. Trump is a liar, a bully, snake-oil salesman, <contd p.97>. The Liberal Left really hate him and have hyped up the hate. Whether or not this translates into action beyond the usual rent-a-mobs remains to be seen. I rather suspect that most Britons don’t really care.
Donald Trump visit to London called off amid fears of mass protests - fuck off and good riddance.
Since when do we weigh our embassies?
It’s a shithole of a country anyway!
All of Britain: Thanks, Obama. No, really, thanks.
I thought that it was Bush Jr that sold the lease to the Embassy. The US doesn’t actually own the site which remains the property of Grosvenor Estates (much to the annoyance of successive US governments). One of the main reasons seems to be the very restrictive planning conditions on this grade 11 listed building. I have seen on social media, the start of groups - left and right wing - beginning to organise pro and anti demonstrations, so maybe calling it off was a wise move.
The removal of the tank traps and other concrete from what is otherwise a beautiful London square will be very welcome. I have to say that architecturally the new embassy will be a great addition to the South Bank. The Qataris will be able to open yet another mega-expensive hotel.
