My female Collie/Beagle mutt (named Macy) is about 7-8 years old. She has also been spayed since she was a puppy. We have another dog, a young male (Chow/Lab mix) named Rusty whom is a 1 year old shelter rescue and he is not neutered.
Macy humps Rusty, quite often when they are together. They do other normal dog stuff like playfight and chase each other around the yard, etc as well.
Macy doesn’t seem to be too particular in how she mounts Rusty. She’ll often hump on him from the rear, or hump his face. I have seen Rusty licking her nether regions before while she was humping his face, but not often.
Does a female dog enjoy cunnilingus? Is that what she’s hoping Rusty will do? Heck, just a few minutes ago Rusty was laying on the ground, paws wrapped around his rawhide bone while he blissfully and mindlessly chewed away as Macy was humping his head.
Is this normal? I tell her “no” when I catch her and she stops. Should I discourage this behavior for any reason? Why is she doing this?
What gives?
ETA I don’t recall seeing Rusty trying to hump her at all, so I don’t think she’s imitating his behavior. But she’s a female…why is she humping the boy dog? Dominance?
That’s my best guess, dominance assertion, but…is this something female dogs normally do in order to establish it rather than through other means, like displays of aggression?
That’s what she used to do with our other dog, and he was roughly the same age. She never once humped him IIRC.
I had two female dogs. Both were spayed. They enjoyed each other’s company. The older female would occasionally hump the younger female, which joined the household as a puppy. I always assumed the older dog was showing the younger one that she was top dog, but in a purely non-aggressive manner.
And for female dogs, humping is a way of asserting dominance? It just seems strange. Rusty the boy dog sometimes is just unaware or doesn’t care that she’s doing it to him. If she’s asserting authority, he doesn’t seem to be getting the message. And doesn’t care.
