Dog identification question (model related)

The perfect user name and response I’ve ever seen.

Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhh

It’s a space dog, so stick two tiny antennae to its head and paint it green? Perhaps with blue spots? A blue ring around the eye, like a space-age version of the dog from the little rascals?

No no, it’s a dog IN space not a dog FROM space! He’s wearing a little space suit and everything.

Thanks for all your, ahem, inputs  I painted him like a Smooth Fox Terrier.

Here he is; after the paint’s dry I’ll give him a coat of matte varnish, and we’ll see how he looks. May need another coat of the purple–but digital photos are extremely unflattering, especially when blown up to full-screen size.

I like him! Sweet lil’ Astro…don’t let him play fetch on the moon though!

I think I would have gone with a lighter color scheme, just on grounds of showing up well under whatever lighting conditions he’s going to be in… but I’m sure that’s a topic you know better than I.

Looks good–please post pics of the project when it’s completed!

A little late, but: shouldn’t his front and back legs be the same color as his face? He wouldn’t put on his gloves and boots without his helmet.

The helmet is probably going to be a plastic dome enclosing the head, but Rocketeer obviously can’t add that until after he’s painted the face.

Actually, I’m punting on the helmet; it’ll be represented by a hoop of shiny wire up over his head. The same for his mistress; I couldn’t figure out a reasonable way to get a nice-looking clear helmet in this scale. The wire hoops are, um, force-field generators; yeah, that’s it.

Astro and Ashley (woman figure) will be talking a spacewalk outside their Saturn Weekender space trailer. When the model is finished, I’ll post some pics over in Cafe Society.

Just so you can see what it’s going to look like, here’s a picture of Ashley Jetson with her “helmet”. Astro’s will be similar.

Ashley’s expression is saying, The damn dog is chasing a space squirrel!

The “helmet” looks good!

ETA: Models are not my bailiwick, but could you find a small, spherical light bulb (like a night-light bulb [wrong shape]) and carefully remove the metal base/guts and use it for a helmet?

Those are gloves on the dogs paws…what’s wrong with you people…moon dust burns dog paws…Who are the two weekending with…are they at a planetary park or is it some kinda music fest on saturn…who is playing…how’s the food out there!!

Looks a bit like a Doberman, now that it’s painted. Nice job.

Here are some Soviet cosmonaut dogs, including the archetypal but tragic Laika.

Thinking of Laika always makes me sad.

I suspect that you’d go through a lot of light bulbs trying to cut the base off neatly. Also, the (head + hair) is larger than the opening at the base of the bulb would be.

That’s not to say you couldn’t use ship-in-a-bottle techniques to assemble the head inside the globe–but it’d be pretty finicky work

I have done something similar already. Moebius put out a lovely resin model of the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz, looking into her crystal ball. Unfortunately, the ball, which is the centerpiece of the composition, is molded in two halves.

So I commissioned a local glass shop to blow me a globe. I cut the insert of Dorothy et al into three parts, which I was able to slip into the globe and gently jiggle back into alignment.

Of course, once the technical problem was solved, I immediately lost interest , and the model is sitting in its box on a shelf in the Room O’ Doom.

Laika makes my eyes tear up. I went to the Soviet version of the Air and Space museum when I was ten, and they had a life-sized model of her in her capsule. That’s how I learned about her.

Stupid. I clicked on your link about Laika, and now I’m sobbing. I shouldn’t even be on the computer, because we’re supposed to be getting ready for Rosh Hashanah dinner. Serves me right.
