There’s been a plethora of kitten pictures lately. I love cats and try to be an equal-opportunity Fan of Fuzzy Things, but at heart, I’m really a dog person. So, since my parents just emailed me a few pics of the NinjaPooch, I’ve decided to share, and try to even up the cat v. dog gap that’s developing here.
Kikmik is my 6 year old, 96 pound MacKenzie River Husky, who I love to death. She doesn’t care much for summer, and spends most of the day on the bed in front of the air conditioner. But in the winter, she is in her element, pulling me on X-country skis, or lounging on the biggest pile of snow in the yard, and snurfling under drifts for any critters, real or imaginary.
Here’s Lucy, our Gordon Setter, who we had to say goodbye to last week. She gave us almost 14 good years.
And, submitted for your approval, Maggie - or if you’re not into the brevity thing, Margaret Wallingford Disraeli Gladstone Cromwell Dog, an English Springer Spaniel, who has been driving us nuts for almost a year and a half now.
I took Scooter in during tropical storm Francis in '98, when he was maybe 6~8 months old. He used to be quite a handful, but as you can see, he’s mellowed out quite a bit now.
I am so sorry for your loss of Lucy. I didn’t know there were any other Gordies here at the Dope. She had a sweet face… but what Gordie doesn’t?? I just lost my Fancy Girl in July at the age 10 to cancer , and Corey , the regal-looking gentleman in the last pic was 14 and a half when we had to say good-bye. They leave huge pawprints on your heart.
They do, yeah. I remember my mother saying that was one of the breeds she’d always wanted, and I’ll have to think about them when I get dogs of my own. They’re great, but it’d be weird to compare one to Lucy so directly.
She is. She’s a brat and maybe not completely sane - she also thinks I’m a chew toy, and she’s got lots of those to begin with - but she’s fun, and besides, we’re stuck with her.
I’ve had mucho experience with the peculiar charm of Springers - we had a beautiful liver-and-white one, like yours, for nearly 14 years. He was a total gentleman. Now we have a black-and-white ESS. He’s nearly two and as one of neighbours recently said, “He’s got a lot of personality that dog.”
Here’s Buckley relaxing on top of me as is his habit, and another one of him after my partner FreshSheets decided it would be fun to dress him up. Totally her idea I might add.
I jest. But to be honest I miss having dogs about a lot. When I was growing up we always had dogs about the place, the most was three Saluki’s at once (these lovely things if you haven’t seen them before). Walking three of those at once was quite the handful!
So in all the years since I’ve lived away from home I’ve not had a dog around (okay…quite a few of those were student years which would make it impossible). At the moment I live in an apartment and work a lot so it’s not going to happen for quite some time…roll on having a house with a garden (aka, ‘racetrack’ to Saluki’s) and being able to work at home!
Sigh If I ever settle down and quit traveling so much for work the first thing I wanna do is get me another dog. I look at all these adoreable critters y’all are showin’ and I want me a baby too! Sigh
You never really compare one dog to the next . Even tho they are the same breed, they each have their own individual personality. I am on my 6th Gordie , I have had at least 1 since 1982 (I first typo’ed 1082 , but I’m not that damned old ) . My Gordon-ogrophy reads:
1982- got Holly
1986-bred Holly , kept Abbie
1989-got Corey
1992-Holly died
1994- got Fancy
1998- Abbie died
2003- Corey died
2004- got Kharma (AKA Wild Child)
2005 - Fancy Died
2005- got Nick
By getting another Gordie , you would be telling Lucy that she made such an impact on your heart that you just can’t live without a Gordie in your life.
If Lucy was a typical Gordon , she would want it that way.
