As a new member, I find myself overwhelmed with the sheer volume of input. For the moment, I’m most concerned with being able to check on the few threads in which I’ve participated. I keep thinking that there must be a simple way to view (follow up) my postings apart from “searching” from scratch each time I log in.
I’m sure I’m being very stupid about this, but I haven’t stumbled into a FAQ or other help feature that describes the optimal way to do this. HELP! Thanks.
Above the opening post in the blue message bar there is a drop down menu for “Thread Tools”, within that you can Subscribe to the thread. You’ll then get an email when someone else posts to that thread. It wont tell you if the new post is is direct reply to yours though.
Or you can do a “vanity search” which is basically sticking your user name into the word search function to see if anyone has used your name or quoted you in a reply.
If you’re using Internet Explorer, you can also check the History folder to see the threads you visited last time. It won’t tell you whether you necessarily posted to them, though. But if you can’t remember from one day to the next which of yesterday’s threads you posted to, then you have bigger problems than we can help you with here in ATMB.
In fact, I do have bigger problems than this esteemed site can help. Oddly, I have a pretty good memory-- I’m the kind of guy who is so disorganized that I tend to pile papers up in stacks, but can (sometimes) uncannily reach into the stack and retrieve what I need. But there are so many threads here that I really don’t remember which one(s) caught my fancy the day before.
I had the same problem on the About.com site. I subscribed to a bunch of different forums, then ended up floundering around trying to get back to where I’d been. I do better on the simpler, or more linear, sites.
BTW, is it me or is the “remember login” feature disabled? I’ve asked the system to remember me on both work and home PCs, but it doesn’t. My browser is set to “Medium” security, which accepts cookies, I think.
Is the ‘search for when quoted’ feature working correctly? I’m pretty sure it’s missed a number of times and I only saw it had happened when I wandered back in the thread.
If you want to consistently track threads you’ve posted to (that’s what I like to do), then go select your UserCP menu, then select Edit Options. Scroll down to Messaging & Notification. You have a number of options:
Do not subscribe
No email
Instant email notification
Daily email notification
Weekly email notification
I can’t quite figure out what the difference is between the first two options though, except that if you choose the Do Not Subscribe option I guess you wouldn’t have the thread subscription marker appear.
What browser are you using? And, Windows (version?), or some other OS?
I’m using IE and my Privacy (cookie) settings are set on “High” and I don’t have any trouble with the “Remember Login” function. One thing you can do, if you’re using IE and having trouble with that, is to Edit your Cookies to tell it to always accept all cookies from here.
Tools, Internet Options, Privacy, then down at the bottom where it says “Edit–To override cookie handling for individual websites”, click on that and put in straightdope.com and click on “Allow”, see if that helps.
If you view your control panel, you can view your subscribed threads. So if you subscribe with No-email, you won’t fill up your e-mail box with posts, but will be able to see every thread that you found significant enough to subscribe to. You can also set your options to subscribe to every thread in which you post.
Or you can simply bookmark. That gives the option of checking it whenever you want without having to sort through email. Then you can simply delete the bookmark when you decided the thread has run it’s course.
