Friends, Romans, Dopers: Lend Me Your Tips

I’m sure this plea has gone out before, so I apologize in advance. But I’m looking for ideas SDMB users have developed for keeping track of where they’ve posted and how to get there again.

The message boards I’m familiar with use Web Crossing software. They’re not threaded. The administrators set up a certain number of folders in subject areas, and conversation proceeds linearly from there. I see that dopers probably like being able to start their own topics on anything they choose and would probably resent begin handed a set number of debate or conversation topics. However, with Web X, you can subscribe to these various folders and the system remembers the last one you read. Therefore, you never lose track of where you’ve been.

OK enough about other sites; I just wanted to let you know where I’m coming from and why I’m having trouble. Do people keep a list of the topics where they’ve posted? Assuming you do remember a thread where you’ve posted, how to get conveniently to the ones you haven’t read? So far, if I post something then shut down the computer, I know that I can do a find on my name and get to that post, then read on. But if I read a thread and don’t post – I have no idea how to find the first one I * didn’t* read.

I did take a moderator’s suggestion to limit the posts I can view to the last day (which is not exactly helpful if I’m offline a couple days) and have tried to limit my posting to a couple of folders. (Steering clear of “the pit” for example!)

Woe is me. Anyway, I’d appreciate some Ideas on Getting Around from anyone who’d like to share them.

If you look at the upper right area of your screen when on the SDMB, you will see a little ‘search’ feature. Open that, and do a search by username. Type in your username, and then set how far back (how many days) you want it to search.

You’ll see every thread you have posted to, and forgot to come back to.
Another method: when answering to a thread, check the little box that says ‘email notification’. The MB will send you an email whenever someone else responds to the thread.

Be more careful with that feature. If the thread you post to is a popular one, you might wind up with 87 emails in your mailbox in one day.

Eeek~ clogged inbox syndrome! I thought that might happen, so I’ve never clicked that option.

I have gone the search route, too, but it only takes you to the thread, not to the specific message. So I’m stuck with the same problem: Where did I leave off??

I appreciate you trying to he’p pore lil ole me, though. I’m dying to zip around like a pro!

Well, once you get to the thread that you previously posted to, go up to ‘edit’ on the top bar of your browser. Look for an option called ‘find’. Type in your username, and hit ‘go’ or whatever. It will scan the page in an instant, and take you to your last post.

Is that what you meant?

My guess is you want the function to work that says
** Go to first unread post ** (at the top of a thread)
Which is still being debugged, last we heard.

To answer your question, I usually bookmark threads where I want an answer. Then I go to the END (use End key) then using aenea’s search (ctrl-f) search UP for my name, to find the last time I added anything.

Not smooth, but it’s what I do.

Ah … dawn breaks. I thought I was using it improperly. So all my troubles will be over when this thing gets fixed, eh?

You mean you bookmark it in your regular browser bookmarks? Or is there some other bookmarkie function here? I can hardly keep track of the bookmarks I’ve got (though I did recently discover the wonder of folders). If I tried adding bookmarks to SDMB threads, I’m afraid I wouldn’t know what in the heck I was accumulating. But i spose I could try it!

I was doing what you said on the ‘find’ aenea.

Thanks you all.

If you pull down File, and pick “send shortcut to desktop”, the name of the thread will appear.
Cntrl-d toggles to the desktop and back.

I only need this for MPSIMS. On the other boards, the titles stay on the list long enough you don’t have to search.

I meant “Windowskey-d” (sometimes called “Startkey-d”) gets you quickly back and forth to the desktop.

I never realized it before, but the board could be confusing to a newcomer.

There are a lot of little things which really help you out.
I’ve never done any of the above, I just keep scrollin’ and scrollin’!

Hell, just yesterday I figured out that you could click on the tiny little numbers in the thread titles and it will take you directly to the second or third page of a thread.
