I don"t like subscribing to threads. I usually can find a thread I’ve posted in and click my name. What can I do if there aren’t any threads around I’ve posted in.
Sometimes I go a few days, and then I think hmmm, wonder what happened in that thread, ya know?
There’s a search link on every page. Click on that, and put your name in the box for “Search by User Name”. That should give you the same results as the “search for all posts by this user”.
Should, I say, but then again, the search engine here is notoriously wonky, so it might not work :(. But give it a try.
I find the easiest way to do it is click on your user name at the top of any post. That will bring up a menu of three or four items, one of which is “Find all posts by Soul Brother Number Two.” You can also use this to find all posts by any other user.
Click on User CP in the left upper corner of your screen.
(that’s short for User Control Panel)
That’ll yield only the threads that had new posts since you last logged in.
I’ve made my User CP my start-up page for the SDMB, so every time I log in, I automatically see if there have been posts in threads I posted in.
I’m not sure what drives your dislike for subscribing. It’s possible to subscribe and NOT get an email notification, which is the only reason I can think that someone would actively not want to subscribe to a thread.
You can also set it to automatically subscribe you (without email notifcation) to any thread that you participate in. This is how mine is currently set. That way, when I come back to the board, I just go to my User CP, as **Maastricht **mentioned, and all my updated threads are listed. It takes no additional effort on my part, and makes it easy to keep track of what I do.
TellMeI’mNotCrazy, I’ll tell you why I’ve disliked subscribing.
There have been repeated complaints that the emails are unreliable. You may get none when you want them, or more than the documentation says.
[post=2327233]This old FAQ post[/post] says that email notices and subscribing are the same. It appears this was true at the time of the post, but that was in 2002. I wasn’t aware of the features you describe.
Thanks for pointing out these features. It’s a reminder we should all check out changes when a new version is installed. I think I don’t post enough to make subscribing useful, but that could change, and now I have another way to handle that.
Thanks also to Strinka for mentioning another option I wasn’t aware of.
